This answer from Jaque is best... "Addiction is a state of being- Abuser is a state of doing." I was diagnosed the same about 10 years ago... A very reputable hospital- out-patient chemical dependency said that I was an habitual abuser not an addict.. how would they really know? We the addict/abuser know best. Can you stop at will? Have you said... this will be the last one and failed? etc. The subject is so complicated and causes so much pain to all involved, more so for the co-dependents than the addict/abuser. I stopped the crap 2+ years ago and have no desire to travel down that dark, sad road again. I may have been labeled an abuser... Fact is I COULD NOT STOP.

A abuser is someone who overuses medication or uses it for a different use than the medical use
An addict is someone whose body is used to the drug and is dependent on it. An addict can't live without the drug, suffers if the drug isn't in the body.
A abuser hasn't yet developed the physical need for the drug yet it doesn't take long for a abuser to become an addict.
Stop and think about your situation. Get help now before you cross the line.

Addiction is a state of being- Abuser is a state of doing.

Being an addict means that you ae enslaved to something and do it out of compulsion. Abuser means that you abuse a substance but aren't necessarily addicted to it.

It's easier for abusers to stop because there's no addiction.

Good luck!

Where alcohol is concerned; use is when you take alcohol in bits or for a particular reason. Abuse is when you take advantage of the alcohol and whenever you do something shameful you tend to blame it and but still continue abusing it. Addiction is when you now feel you are connected to the alcohol feeling you can not live or do anything without it. so you are addicted to it every now and then.

Drug abuse is the basic usage of illegal drugs or taking prescribed drugs without following the amounts prescribed by the doctor. Addiction is when you cannot stop using them.

People who are addicted to substances either show an increased tolerance, and/or they have withdrawal symptoms when they don't have the substance. The line between abuse and dependence can be kinda blurry, so take care of yourself.
