I don't get It? If your white and your ancestors are fom Ireland are you Ireland American?Or if your Mexican and you live in the states are you Mexican America?

Your blood origin is just that - your blood origin. It has absolutely nothing to do with your nationality. Your grandfather might have been African, Irish, German or Mexican, and so you would have that blood, perhaps even be that "race," but you live in the United States. That makes YOU American. Just plain American.

I believe that all that hyphenated crap is what is destroying the unity in our country. How can we call ourselves a melting pot when everybody wants to divide themselves into separate groups? It's so unnecessary, and so destructive.

If you ask an American of Irish descent what he(she) is, they will usually reply "Irish" even though they were born in the states.Ireland is the country their forefathers immigrated from. Same goes for Mexicans.

Since the majority of Blacks in the states don't know the original country their ancestors were taken from as slaves, they say African(American), which is a continent not a country.

To answer your question, you are called whatever your given name is. In trying to find a more appropriate name to be called - whites did not consider blacks American but the "n" word and other derogatory terms - some thought that African-American would be a more appropriate term that instilled pride and identity in blacks who had been stripped of their identity and made to feel less that human and treated worst that animals.

Having all of these label can be very confusing to people because 1) Africa is a big continent; people who were born in Africa and come to the US are considered Afro-Americans as the term is just for blacks who were born in America. So the term Afro-American is useless as it doesn't really say much about who a person is or where their ancestors originated. 2) Other groups of people usually identify themselves by their place of origin or ancestry such as Italians, Puerto Ricans and Guatemalans - or as American, if that's where they were born and that's what you choose to call yourself.

The name game is a very complex one and is never just cut and dry.

There is scientifically only one race, the human race.

Everything else is "Culture". Once everyone erases all the stigmas and grasp this fact, we will be able to celebrate each other and all the beauty of the different cultures...
