Depends on how much you're willing to spend and what kind of food you like.
My favorite restaurant in Chicago for some time has been MK.
If you're looking for a great Chicago steakhouse, Keefer's is excellent. Gibson's delivers a more traditional "Chicago" experience, but the service can be rushed. Nine is very avant garde and chic, but, except for the smores, doesn't measure up.
Lower in price and with an incredibly well thought out wine list is Erwin on North Halsted. They do innovative American cooking and the service is phenomenal.
For Asian, Japonaise is exciting and interesting and although its sushi is far from the best in town, its sake list can't be beat.
Finally, for casual dining, Goose Island Brewing in River North has great beers (including cask ales) and great bar food.

If you're visiting Chicago that weekend in July, I recommend going to the Taste of Chicago. You can sample all types of food from different Chicago area restaurants.

You're talking about Chicago here!!!! There is everything you can imagine in this city (food wise). Phils Pizza (37th and Halsted), Giordanos, Connie's the best pizza in town. Maggianos, or Leonas is really good Italian. Faro de Ciao all you can eat meat. Pompei has great sandwiches. Just try going to the Taste of Chicago, multitude of variety to choose from.

Lou Malnatti's for pizza Portillo's for an Italian Beef or a hot dog and get the Chocolate cake for dessert. If you want something unusual go to the Billy Goat. Head up to the Tribune Building, across the street is a stairway that will take you under the street area. Billy Goat Tavern is right there. There are signs and arrows pointing the way so you won't get lost. Cheeseburger, chips, no fries.

Something a little different! Geja's cafe is an awesome fondue restaurant. The ambiance is romantic with a classical guitar playing in a dimly candlelit venue. The location is great. Just around the corner from Rush street near The Park West.

Here are a couple GREAT Indian restaurants:
Tiffin on Devon Street. The north indian cuisine is fantastic! I have never had a better chicken makhani (butter chicken, don't worry, its not really butter). Its not that expensive and you will not regret going there.
Another one is called Udupi Palace. Its a south indian restaurant and is owned by the same person as Tiffin. Its totally different from Tiffin but the food is as delicious. I hope you try these two restaurants!

It depends on your budget and taste, however these are some of my faves:
Bistro 110-French
Capital Grille-steak
Fireplace Inn-BBQ--best ribs in the city in my opinion
Kinzie Chop House-steak
Mon Ami Gabi-French
Morton's-steak
Nine-steak
TRU-French
Les Nomades-French
Avoid the Signature Room at the 95th--it's at the top of the John Hancock; beautiful views but horrible and WAY overpriced food. My suggestion would be go to their bar for a drink to enjoy the view : )

if you have not been to McCormick and Schmick's it is great - there are a few around the country but it is a great seafood restaurant.
Lawry's Steakhouse is pretty good - it is an interesting experience, albeit a bit overpriced, but cheaper than Morton's.
If you like ribs there is a great polace in Old Town which was a hangout for Al Capone back in the day, don't know the name of it but ask around.
