The shoes are black leather and cloth. They are used, so I'm afraid that they might have athlete's foot or some other foot fungus or disease. Is there an inexpensive way I can sanitize them?

I would use Lysol.

Lysol spray. Actually if the shoes haven't been worn for some time the fungus would die as they need damp enviroments to live. You could hit them with a athletes foot powder to ease your mind about fungus. I have never had a problem with second hand shoes.

I tend to agree with the writer who suggested that certain things you don't wear second hand unless you absolutely cannot help it. Shoes not only have fungus and other bacterial traits that you may or may not be able to get rid of, but the person who wore the shoes prior to you, has already established the "print" and foot pattern of wear. Your feet , shape, pattern and print are totally different from theirs and you could possibly ruin your feet. I used to get angry with my mom when she made me wear heavy supportive shoes that kept my feet enclosed, no toes out, no fancy strapes, no heel out, nothing fancy that the other girls wore. Today. I appreciate it. I have no corns, callouses, hammer toes, disfigurements, bunions, or the like on my feet. Some are hereditary, but for the most part, shoes and underwear are no-nos./
