I have always attempted to search for truth as can be best understood by me at the moment, modifying it as new information becomes available. I also start from the vantage point that I am not God, and do not now or will not have "THE answer" in my life time. I am open to accepting truths that it would be easier and more fun to ignore. In other words, I have a sincere deisre to see things as they are, not how I wish them to be.
But I do believe that the universe has a single absolute truth, and it is bigger than me. I think that coming from this reference point allows for more confidence in my decisions on what I believe. I come across so many people that decide what is true first, and then go looking for justification later, be it in the Bible,Quran, or a science book. What they would tell you is true, is really what is easiest or most beneficial for them personally. The universe is so much larger than the individual.

I believe If you take a baseball bat and hit yourself in the head, it will hurt. That's truth.
Is there an afterlife? Probably not, but who really knows. I haven't been dead yet, so without being able to experience death, or hear from someone who was dead a few days and came back (no...the jesus story was made up by people in funny hats), it's impossible for me to say what is true.

Because they free me from the trap of guilt and unforgiveness.
Because they allow me to escape the dysfunctional way I was raised. They allow me to help others instead of staying wrapped up in my own hurt. I can help others understand the way out of the darkness, because I have been there.
Because they allow me to move past the shame and failure of my childhood and help me to become someone I am at peace with.
