This is a very difficult question to answer. Lots of people argue for BARF, or bones and raw food diet, but I'm going to assume that you're looking for dry food here and skip that. There's a great list from the Pit Bull Forum (http://www.pitbullforum.com/viewtopic.php?t=23039) submitted by a user named barbponys. It has full descroptions, but the rundown is #1Timberwolf #2 Nature’s Variety #3 Merrick, #4 Wellness #5 Canidae.

They're expensive, but one thing you have to keep in mind is that you feed much less with good dog food. Most commercial dog food is full of fillers, which means the dogs have to eat a lot to get enough nutrients. When you feed quality dog food you need less to get the same nutritional equivilant, so in effect you save money. It also means less poop!

A great article on all the bad stuff in commercial dog food can be found here: http://www.healthyplanetrx.com/articles.asp?id=137

But the bottom line, for me, is that active, well-treated dogs are much healthier than wolves or wild dogs have ever been, so we're doing something right. I feed Nutro Max (Natural Choice), which is a premium dog food that can be found at most stores (unlike many of the top 5 above). It's convienient, and has a lot of human-grade materials. Much better than anything else you'll find at PetCo. It's also reasonable. I feed that and maybe a raw egg a week. Occasionally ad a little bit of olive oil. Their coats will get very soft, teeth will be clean, and they'll go to the bathroom less. What more could you want!!

I alternate between several grain-free brands: Evo, Canidae, Before Grain, Blue Wilderness, and Professional. Originally, only my St. Bernard was eating the grain free food. Our vet recommended protein food because she has digestive health issues (I have 4 dogs total) but the other three began stealing her food and ignoring the Beneful... even though my chihuahua/terrier mix was obsessed with the red kibbles, he gave them up for her food, that was the cue that we may as well just feed them all the same food. I have noticed less gas and more energy in all the dogs, and my St. Bernard is no longer a perpetual poop factory. All combined, the dogs eat about 20 cups/day. My dogs don't eat canned food, but they do get the occasional home-made meals when my grocery budget allows it.

Stay away from popular brands like Iams and Science Diet, as well as Purina or anything like it! Other are right, they are full of fillers and crap! Look for a food that has a protien as the first ingredient. Chicken, fish, beef, or lamb. No "by-products" either. Just a fancy way of saying bones, hooves and feathers. Try any of the following:
Merrick
California Natural
Natural Balance
Innova
Canidae
Solid Gold
Wellness
Eagle Pack

Any of these are quality pet foods. And it is true, with a better quality food, they won't need to eat as much, they will be getting better nutrition and therefore, less pooping!

The best brand of food to feed them is whichever one meets these two requirements: highest quality within your budget and something they will eat.

I feed mine Nutro Ultra. It is found at your local Petsmart. I like it because it provides good nutrition, balanced diet, and less stool. It is a more expensive dog food, but I also end up feeding them less of it because it is richer in content than a grocery food such as Pedigree.

Some other good foods are Bil-Jac, Eukanuba, and other Nutro products. These are all premium foods that contain higher quality ingredients and greater health benefits for your dogs. If your dogs suffer from food allergies, you might consider giving Nature's Recipe a try. It can do wonders for dogs who suffer from wheat, corn, and beef allergies.

Make sure you consider their size and age group when you purchase food. A large breed dog requires a different diet than a medium size breed, and a dog's nutritional requirements change as they age.

Also remember to not just change to the new food. It is best to gradually increase the amount of the new food over a period of time. I usually allow four weeks to make the transition.

I will never feed my dog packaged dog food again! I feed my dog a raw diet. The pet food companies don't want you to know what kind of crap is in dog food since it's a billion dollar a year business. Do some research. Dogs are descendants of wolves, so they should eat like wolves. My dog has been eating raw meat and bones for 6 months and loves everything he gets.

DO NOT feed science diet, iams, or ol' roy. science diet has a chemical in it that is found in anti-freeze and can shorten the life span of your animal. Iams has alot of wheat and corn which could cause bloat. Ol' roy also has this problem and it would be better off feeding your dog marsmallows and chocolate.
i work at a pet store where we believe in hollistic dog foods. do not feed anything with high corn or wheat as it can cause bloat. I feed my dog Nature's Variety and it is really nice. They believe in variety so you buy a different flavor of food each time.

I feed my dogs Flint River Ranch; I switched from Eukanuba. They use human-grade ingredients, all natural, no preservatives, etc. Best thing is they ship it to your door; no making special trips to the pet store. Check out frr.com for more info - lots of different foods, treats, etc.

I am now able to feed my dogs 1/2 as much as I used to because calorie content is high. . .and they absolutely love the food!

Pedigree I believe is what I feed my dogs. It is the yellow bag you can get just about anywhere is is 17.99 for a 45 lb bag at walmart or 17.99 fo a 55 lb bag at sams. I have always fed it to my two golden retrivers, and they are healthy also big 125 lbs and 80 lbs(puppy 10 months)

The raw and fresh diet. I do not feed my dogs any form of actual dogfood. I feed mine fresh veggies(cooked) meat scraps from the meat shop. This diret is actually the best diet you can feed your dogs. Mine have no health problems and only see a vet for shots and worming. I have many old dogs and they live for this food.
