It's the name of God.

Exodus 3:14: God said to Moses, "I am who I am . This is what you are to say to the Israelites: 'I Am has sent me to you.' "

Well I Am isn't exactly what He said His name was. He said "I Am" in referrence to Himself. However, one could prostilate that one of His many names could be I Am, because the bible says "I Am come that you may have life and have it more abundantly. Interesting thought....

Of course we are speaking of God/Christ in either form. Because in the Old Testament God talks about himself as "I am" and the verse I just quoted above is Christ talking about Himself in the New Testament. Obviously the two are one.

It is God, Yahweh. The real question is Who is I AM. It's all capitalized out of reverence, since the Jews weren't supposed to write or speak His name. This is also why the Pharisees thought Jesus was being blasphemous in the New Testament because He said I AM who I AM. That was Him claiming to be God because no one said I AM about themselves; that was reserved for Yahweh.

Nobody is called "l'am" with an "L" spelling, but "I AM" is the translation of one of God's Hebrew names : "Eyeh asher eyeh" (pronounced with a long "a" sound: AY-yeh AH-share -AY-yeh) which means "I am that I AM" or "I am That Which Exists."
