is the reason they say commercial grade because they are mostly used for commercial applications? i've always heard that GMC trucks are better quality because they are used in heavier duty applications...is that true?

Yeah, I would say that. The reason I say that is because I was a fireman in a small town in louisianna and we purchased 2 fire trucks. One was a chevy and one was a GMC. The 2 trucks were pretty much identical but the blue prints on them showed that GMC had a heavier duty frame. So we qeustioned the manufacture about this and they confirmed that they were different and that the Gmc is more H.D. than the chevy.

A GMC is just a gussied up Chevrolet with different badging. Same body...same assembly line....mostly same parts. Truck for truck the GMC will have more standard options than a Chevy.

It is partially true. I used to work in the pick up truck assembly plant in Oshawa Ontario Canada where 90% of the vehicles are exported to the US. The main differences are in the springs that where put on each model. The Chevy springs are a different to give a smoother ride like a car. The springs have the same capacity but varied in the number of leaves and thickness of the leaves. All models are built on the same line, just different parts for different models.

Same truck, made by the same people. Their used to be some differences, engines and such, and the older GMC was more of a commercial vehicle with Plain Jane looks. The Trim package is about all that is different now.

they are the same trucks and chassis so I don't think anything is more heavy duty on them unless it is ordered heavier. But now Ford is super duty or half ton. Gm and GMC are the same trucks just diversified for tax shelter purposes is why they appear to made by two different companies.

Nope. sorry to burst your bubble pal. There is zero difference between GMC & Chevy trucks except minor trim and option packages. It's 100% marketing hype. They are built on exactly the same assembly line, using exactly the same engines, transmissions, chassis, etc.
This kind of BS is one reason GM is in the dumper.

GMC Does offer a heavy duty package but towing wise they can tow about the same amount of weight, at least there is no significant difference.
