A baby ring is really a neat gift because it is a keepsake and she can wear it on a necklace when she gets older.
or a childrens bible
or a plaque with some inspirational words for her room.
You could start a tradition and every year give her a book for her birthday with a special message inside. Max Lucado has some great books with inspirational messages. Then you could add a little stuffed animal or something to go along with the story theme.

One of those playhouses you put in the backyard. The ones that are kind of a plastic-y material. I think Fisher Price makes some.
I got one of these when I was very small and played with it every day until I finally was too tall to go inside anymore. She may be a little bit young for it now, but I'm sure she'll love it! I know that my playhouse is one of my treasured childhood memories.

Get something that makes noise and lights up, and watch the age recommendations on the toy. You don't want to get her anything that has small parts she can put in her mouth and choke on.
There are story books and dolls that squeak when squeezed, or you can go the traditional route and just get her a stuffed animal. Babies love things with textures that they can hug, too.

Give the gift of reading! Buy her an age appropriate storybook. The bookstore has plenty to choose from. Being read to by her parents (and you when you visit) makes a fun activity. It will foster a love of books and reading that will help her later in school and throughout her life.

BEST gift I ever bought my daughter (she's 2.5 years now) is a Fisher Price rocking horse ($20). She wouldn't touch it for about two months, but ever since about 14 months, she's on it DAILY!! She even scoots herself on it all over the house. It makes neigh sounds and plays about 2 different "horse" songs....everything else kind of loses its luster with her, but not this rocking horse!! My son turns 1 this month, and I'm buying him a rocking motorcycle. I hope he enjoys it as much as she has her horse.
AND, she loved any doll that moved and made noise. Hokey Pokey Elmo, Walking Pooh, etc (HAD to move though, if just talked, she wouldn't play with)...GL!

I would also say clothes. Put it in a box and wrap it with really bright/busy paper. She'll enjoy playing with the wrapping paper and box and the clothes will be something useful. Go with something in the 18-24 month size for a normal sized baby.

Books. Reading is a good thing, and she's at the age to comprehend what's being read to her. They're not too expensive, and she'll love them for years.

Something that rolls. She'll be walking soon and will sometimes need something to lean on/ push as she practices. One of those fake lawnmowers, or a little pretend car, or one of those things that rolls and makes popping sounds.

Stacking cups. We got some for my daughter when she was a wee one, and she STILL plays with them (she's 7). Kids love 'em, especially in the bathtub. They usually come in stacks of 8.
