Not really; in fact, if we would read the Bible more, we could put an end to the argument.
"Because they did these things, God left them and let them go their sinful way, wanting only to do evil. As a result, they became full of sexual sin, using their bodies wrongly with each other. They traded the truth of God for a lie. They worshiped and served what had been created instead of the God who created those things, who should be praised forever. Amen. Because people did those things, God left them and let them do the shameful things they wanted to do. Women stopped having natural sex and started having sex with other women. In the same way, men stopped having natural sex and began wanting each other. Men did shameful things with other men, and in their bodies they received the punishment for those wrongs. People did not think it was important to have a true knowledge of God. So God left them and allowed them to have their own worthless thinking and to do things they should not do. They are filled with every kind of sin, evil, selfishness, and hatred. They are full of jealousy, murder, fighting, lying, and thinking the worst about each other. They gossip and say evil things about each other. They hate God. They are rude and conceited and brag about themselves. They invent ways of doing evil. They do not obey their parents."
"Before bedtime, men both young and old and from every part of Sodom surrounded Lot's house. They called to Lot, "Where are the two men who came to you tonight? Bring them out to us so we can have sexual relations with them." Lot went outside to them, closing the door behind him. He said, "No, my brothers! Do not do this evil thing. Look! I have two daughters who have never slept with a man. I will give them to you, and you may do anything you want with them. But please don't do anything to these men. They have come to my house, and I must protect them."
See, both texts say it is evil and sinfull.

The Bible clearly states that homosexuality is wrong. That marriage is between a man and a woman. You don't NEED a universal Christian leader and Church to speak authoritatively on the subject. Most churches will say that homosexuality is wrong. Totally wrong and the Bible preaches tolerance, but never acceptance. Allowing homosexual marriage would be accepting the sin.

I am from the left side of that debate, and I agree completely that the government should not control marriage. The way I see it, there is nothing wrong with homosexuality and they deserve the same rights as heterosexual marriages. The problem is, a lot of people are offended by the idea of homosexual marriage. If the government only recognized civil unions and didn't try to tell everyone who's married and who isn't, then each person could recognize the marriages that they think are okay.

No, even if there were no debate about what the Bible says - even if the Bible was nothing more than 300 pages of 'No Gay Marriage. No Gay Marriage. No Gay Marriage.' over and over again - the debate would still be a legitimate one, because the cause is legitimate. the 67% of the world who don't believe in the Bible in any interpretation whatsoever would still be able to have this debate.

A likely story. I don't know what "Christians" you're referring to, brother, but the Bible clearly and unequivocally says homosexual behavior is WRONG. You can't change that, so you're wishing for some kind of earthly authority somehow to overrule the Bible and approve your favorite sin? Ha! And I haven't noticed any particular controversy between "liberal and conservative Christians" about it, either. You make this one up yourself? Your creative-writing skills need some work.

Marriage is a sacrament of the church you belong to and the religion you believe in. Government should not give marriage licenses, only "civil union licenses" -- otherwise it infringes on freedom of religion. Mormons and Muslims (for example) should be able to have more than one spouse in the eyes of their own religion, but, if the government (the will of the people en masse) rules that, to promote domestic tranquility and the general welfare, civil unions should consist of exactly two partners, that position is defensible as being the legal (not religious) constraint.

No. The reason for the debate stems from the fact that some choose to follow their way instead of God's way.
This argument is a case of sin against God. I choose God and reject sin. I pray that everyone else does too.

A cardinal comes in to see the Pope.
"I have good news and bad news," says the cardinal.
"What's the good news?" asks the Pope.
"Jesus Christ has returned to the earth," replies the cardinal.
"Great! What's the bad news?" asks the Pope.
"He's phoning from Salt Lake City," says the cardinal.

I need no one to speak for me except me. It does seem silly to me that homosexuals want to get married, but beyond that I couldn't care less.
