smell the bottom to see if it smells 'sweet'.
also squeeze to see if it's not too soft or too firm.

Look at the color, the darker, usually the better for it ensures the sweetness. Also the firmness and softness of the pineapple. Not too firm nor too soft. You'll get the hang of it I'd say.

The smell should give it away. Usually a sweet smelling pineapple is fresh. Also, by pulling out one of the leaves can tell you. If it comes out easily, it is ripe!

Go to Hawaii and pick it in the field. Other than that the pinapples are picked fairly unripened and do not have the same flavor. Some people say turn the pinapple over and smell the bottom. If it smells sweet and strongly of pinapple it is good.

Pull on one of the leaves at the top, if it pulls out easily, it's ripe enough to eat.

in my experience, ones that turn golden in color are the best.. wait until it just turns golden around the whole thing and then cut open
