What state do you live in? I am a seven year veteran law officer and i have never heard of such. Everything revolves around the title and registration. There is such a thing as community property between people in a relationship in some states and this may be what the officer is baseing his opinion on. In the state i am from ( since he is an ex and the vehicle is registered to you) you have the right to file this as a stolen vehicle or at least an unauthorized use of a motor vehicle. Go talk to an attorney girl.

If your name is the only one on the title the you are the sole owner of the vehicle. Tell the ex-boy friend to take a hike and if he doesn't stay awy then you will have him thrown in jail for violating the restraing order.

If only your name is on the title then it legally belongs to you! He cannot do anything wit the truck without the title or a bill of sale if the vehicle is 10 years old or older!

If you have the title to that truck and ONLY your name is on it, then both your ex AND the detective have no idea what they are talking about. Go to the DMV and ASK them who is listed as the title holder for that vehicle. They can give you a print-out which shows that. THEN you can go to the police dept. and kick some butt.

Why would the police give it to him? Because it's a truck & he's the guy? Do you live in a country where women aren't allowed to own things? Go to a higher court and report the theft, and report the police that gave it to him. Get a lawyer too. Perferrably a female lawyer.

sue them,
Yes the current title and papers where it is registered are the ownership papers ( the final say)
obviously your ex has either faked papers, got a new title issued though some level of fraud.
If he is in possession of the truck, and will not give it back, and you can prove it is yours, also call the police to have him charged with theft by conversion.

If the title shows your name and not his, then it legally belongs to you and he has NO claims to it.
In fact, if he has the car, and the title has only your name on it, then in theory, he has stolen your property, and you should ask the police to help you regain possession of your vehicle.
