Diesel automobiles have a number of advantages over gasoline (petrol) powered vehicles. One of the biggest is that the fuel is less costly. In Europe, where fuel prices are many times higher than in the US (for now, at least), this is a very significant factor.

Depending on the make and design of the vehicle, often diesel-powered cars last longer and cost less to maintain.

Drawbacks include usually less power and speed, dirty emissions, weight-to-power ratio, noise and other factors.

Germany, as noted the homeland of the diesel engine, manufactures a large number of diesel-powered cars so their prices are also more accessible. The factors named here go a long way to appealing to a thrifty and practical people.

You wanna check that? There are tons of diesel-powered autos and trucks in cold weather climates like Minnesota, Wisconsin, and even Alaska.

Maybe Germans like them because Diesel was German.
