I don't know, but I think that you and I alike are a conglomeration of cells. We do not have souls that determine our personalities or ethics, or suffer the consequences of our actions, if we did, physical substances like anti-depressants, or traumatic brain injuries would not affect our personalities. The person is located in the brain, and so the person, like the composition of the brain is always changing. You, or your personality, is an emergent property. You feel like you are yourself. Certainly you are, but yourself includes everythings that makes you you, your virtues and vices, your conscious, and subconscious, your mole on your right cheek, if you have one, or the fact that you don't. Maybe this is reductionistic, but I think that if the supreme being, assuming there is one, wanted to give you a better answer, you would have it already.

YOU were born to become a son of GOD Himself! GOD is a ROYAL FAMILY and He is creating sons and daughters to join Him in His Kingdom! Scripture is FULL of this! Christ brought the GOOD NEWS of the KINGDOM of GOD! He paved the way for us! He became the first human being to be born an immortal Son of GOD the FATHER! But it didn't stop there! WE are here for a fantastic purpose! We are to develop the very Royal Nature of GOD--How He thinks,acts,speaks,creates...and from there,RULE over the vast UNIVERSE!!! How is it people don't know this? It's been in your Bible all along! Satan's time is about up! WE are going to REPLACE HIM! He failed to carry out God's will over the Earth and the Cosmos! And that is why WE must overcome him like Christ did,and qualify to RULE as Kings/Queens! No wonder few have heard this--the devil and his demons have BLINDED so many from their true future! But it is true...and it is GOING TO HAPPEN,believe it or not..........

Is the fact that no one could answer or you simply did not want to accept the truth?
Hinduism says that you (the real you) are a spirit soul inhabiting a material body. The material body will eventually die, but you, the soul, will either move onto another material body or go back to the spiritual world depending on your desires/actions.

I think God put it best when he answered this question put to him by Moses at the Burning Bush.
His answer was "I am that I am".
This response has deep esoteric meaning, not only for the nature of God but also the nature of man. It's not the logic of the answer that is important but the shift in perspective about the question this answer implies that is so useful.

every religion teaches this philosophy but not as indept as the science of identity institute.We are SPIRIT SOULS, the body which we are in are not our true self but temporary "vehicles" to ride in for trials in this world for perfection so that we may return to the supreme soul giver. So, it is unquestionable why we should satisfy or give in to the needs of our spiritual needs first before the material needs because material cravings are never satisfied. And we can only do this by doing what pleases God first, in worthy actions,and in words by constantly chanting God's holy names.I'm a muslim, one who submits to the will of God,i hope.

Accordingly to my guru and the Bhagavad Gita , we are jiva badha, conditional soul.
we are spiritual soul covered up with gross and subtle body and until we get free from them, we will have to accept birth and death , life after life.
