I am wondering about this because it's the norm to turn it on in the morning and have it cooking all day while at work. I don't ever do this (or even leave so much as my toothbrush charging) because of other peoples experiences with close calls with slow cooking in the oven and other things that seemed relatively safe to leave unattended.

You must have an old one. I've never had a problem w/ CP's even with the old ones. Make sure you add at LEAST 1 cup water.

The newer ones have time settings w/ auto shutoff and a keep warm function.

The easiest way to feel better if you keep your old one is to get a Christmas light timer at the hardware store. That way it'll shut off the power if you forget.

I have never heard of this happening before. Although I wouldn't slow-cook anything in an unattended oven all day , a crock pot left turned on to do its thing all day while you're gone is the norm and what it's supposed to do. Maybe someone had problems because of poor wiring or a defective switch or something on the cooker itself. As someone who uses a crock pot fairly regularly, I would say it's a non-issue and nothing you should be worried about. As long as your slow cooker is in good condition, go for it!

I've never heard of a fire starting because of that. Crock pots were invented so you could set up your food to cook while you're not home, or while you're in another room.

I think most fires are still started by unattended candles, since they have an open flame.

I've never had any my Crock Pot start on fire or start anything else on fire. I guess there must be people who put the Crock Pot by flammable stuff, but I never have. I leave it on my counter about 6-8" away from anything else.

I guess they have to give those kinds of warnings because there are people out there who don't see a problem with leaving their crock pot by a bunch of newspapers or paper towels or something like that.
