Okay, I'm 14 and i wright for my local newspaper. I'm doing a story about locks of love and why it's become more popular in the recent months. What are some new trends that you might think are going on around the country? Do you think that this might be because more girls are going with shorter hair vs. longer hair. or do you think it might be because more people want to help a chairity after so much was lost in the south because of the distructive hurricanes last year (the headquarters of L.O.L is in FL). Please let me know what you think.

i just cut my hair yesterday and im giving it to locks of love. its kind of a combination of my own hair preference and sense of charity. this is the second time ive made a drastic cut and will send the hair to LOL, but i wouldnt have done it if it was just for charity. mostly i just like going from long to short, and i wait until its long enough for LOL because i want it to be worthwhile. i do think shorter hair is getting more and more common than long hair though. for me anyway, LOL just gives more purpose to my haircut. i get really emotionally attached to my hair, so when i decide its time to cut it, its nice to know im not just chopping it off for nothing :)

good luck with your article

I'm not sure why... perhaps it is because young people do not do research about their charities of choice.

Here is an article from http://somewoman.livejournal.com/72180.html :

"Myth: the wigs are donated
The recipients pay for the wig. The cost is somewhat based on family income, but there is a cost involved.

Half-truth: the wigs are for children
Human hair wigs can be itchy and are incredibly hard to care for. Synthetic wigs are better suited for children. Or a scarf or hat.

Myth: the wigs are for cancer patients
Many people with hair loss due to cancer will be denied assistance. The primary target of Locks of Love is people who have permanent hair loss due to alopecia. Hair loss due to cancer treatments is considered temporary. The Locks of Love website itself says that people with temporary hair loss are given synthetic wigs.

Myth: Hair donations are needed
Locks of Love receives over 104,000 hair donations every year, but has created only 1,000 wigs since 1997. Even at 10 donations per wig, that's a lot of hair unaccounted for.

Half-truth: Locks of Love is a charity
While classifed as a charitable organization by the federal government, they have failed to meet the standards for charitable accountability. Locks of Love has been shady with their books, not allowing the Better Business Bureau to see how exactly they manage to bring in over $350,000 via donations and produce 113 human-hair and 39 synthetic wigs in one year. More than a third of that income came from selling donated hair."

While it is a good thought, the truth is that most of the hair donated goes to make hair extensions for rich people.
There are other similar alternatives that are much better. I would suggest that they do some research first.

My Mom donated her hair to locks of love last year.
She wanted to do something that would help somebody else.
I think more people are more concsious of the plight of people who are affected by cancer, and other diseases that would cause the loss of hair, and are especially touched by the stories of children. Your hair is easy to give up, costs little, grows back, and goes a long way toward helping a child with no hair feel "normal".
Autism is gaining popularity right now because of the huge increase in cases of children diagnosed with Autism.
I just heard on National Public Radio yesterday that volunteerism is up significantly across the country.
I live in Charlotte County, largely damaged by hurricane Charlie, but I haven't heard much about any national attention that Charlotte County is getting other than the closure of the FEMA park, which was supposed to provide temporary housing, and ended up being a more permanent housing arrangement than it was initially intended to be.

I don't think it has anything to do with fashion. I think that it's all about the way it makes us feel.

I think that we donate to locks of love because it helps us feel less powerless. We're all touched by cancer. Even if we don't have a family member we know school mates that have had it. Two of my friends died of leukemia in high school. My favorite teacher, my mom and my aunt all had different kinds of life threatening cancers.

I donated my hair because even if I didn't have any money to donate, or didn't have the brains to go into research and cure them all myself, I could at least give them what I did have--my hair-- to make their struggle a little easier. Besides-it's a totally renewable resource, so I can always grow it back, and cut it off again next year.

I beleive that girls with longer hair that get it cut short would rather have it donated to help make wigs for cancer patients then watch it be thrown out. I don't know about how it's become more popular but I have been donating my hair to locks of love for the past ten years whenever I cut my hair short.

One of my best friends did it and she did it just because she had super long hair and just did not want to throw it away. I think people rather have their hair go to a good cause rather than be thrown away in the trash. It is also in magazines all the time it passes from one girl to the next.

properly, the girls in faculties in Australia prefer to positioned on short shorts, it really is quite digusting because you may just about see their bum cheeks superb out, and it really is even better feral in the adventure that they are fat. And maximum of them are. also the non loopy short short women at my college are very anti-necklaces on boys, in certain the neon pink, yellow, or eco-friendly seashell-tied-to-a-bit-of-string necklace. Do they imagine they are cool? actually there are countless better traits I desire would go away...instantly hair for one...it really is unbelievebly overdone right here in Australia! I swear 9 out of each 10 little ones prefer to straighten their hair each morning. and what's worse is at the same time as the girls purchase the hair extensions (no longer unavoidably of their proper hair color both, again with the fluro!) and go away the right area of their hair no longer instantly. so that you spot helmet hair on the right which will develop into instantly and/or fluro on the bottom. Gross!
