Question: Do dogs eat grass because they need to vomit, or do they vomit simply because they eat grass?
Answer: The cause and effect relationship in animals of eating grass and then vomiting is often questioned. No one has ever proven that dogs are intelligent enough to use grass as a medicinal herb, so those in the medical profession generally believe that dogs eat grass simply because they like the taste of it and that the vomiting just follows.
Therefore, it's unlikely that a dog will eat grass or other plants in the hopes that they will settle its stomach. Be aware, however, that some plants, or grass that has been treated with fertilizer or herbicide, can cause stomach upset or other problems, some of which may be severe. See Prevent Poisonings for a list of toxic plants.
The Companion Animal Behavior Program at the University of California at Davis School of Veterinary Medicine is currently conducting a study of grass and plant eating behavior in dogs (and cats). Many theories as to why dogs eat plants have been proposed. However, this is the first scientific study to investigate this common behavior.

They eat it when they have an upset stomach. Shortly after a dog eats grass, the dog usually throws up. This cleansout the dog's stomach. Keep in mind that dogs are naturally scavengers who eat some pretty disgusting things, so nature has provided a way for dogs to clean out their stomachs if something does not agree with them. But even dogs who only eat dog food will still do this occasionally -- It's a totally natural process. however, it's a good idea not to bring a dog inside right after grass-eating, unless you like cleaning up the mess.

Dogs eat grass when they need to get something in their stomach that's bothering them. They eat grass because it makes them sick up. But there are some dogs who are just stupid and eat anything. You might want to keep a chronic grass eater away from grass if possible and consult a vet to make sure he/she doesn't have a real problem.

Most dogs eat grass because they either have an upset stomach or they are lacking something in their diet.
The grass will usually make them vomit.
IF you are feeding your dog a lower priced dog food you may want to consider changing it to an upscale brand. Preferably one that contains meat (chicken, lamb, beef) as the first ingredient.

He probably has an upset stomach. Dogs will eat grass to settle acid in their stomachs when they feel ill.
But, he could also just be bored while he's out in the yard. Dogs get into a lot of crazy stuff when they feel bored. Try throwing some toys out in the yard for him to play with.
Don't worry though, nothing is seriously wrong with your pooch!
