Close. These are different uses of the same gift. One is public and the other private.
Another use is for intercession whether for yourself or others. It is for the times when we don't know how to pray, so we let the spirit pray perfect prayers through us, since he knows the mind of God. (See Romans 8:26-28) That is when all things work together for good.
Also can be used for praising God, when we sing in the Spirit (1 Corinthians 14:15)

Read Act chapter 2.
When you are filled with the Holy Spirit every person will hear with understanding. You will hear and understand the Holy Spirit in the language that you spoke as when you were a child.
If you think you are filled with the Holy Spirit and others don't understand what you are saying, than, it is NOT the Holy Spirit.
To blaspheme the Holy Spirit is to deny the Holy Spirit to speak through the elect when the elect witness against the devil at the end.
That's the unforgivable sin.

The Bible is just not that clear about tongues. There are specific cases, like in Acts 2 when others heard people speaking in languages not their own. It appears that in the Greek (the original language of the New Testament) that the miracle may not have been in the words being spoken, but in what was heard. The literal version of what that text says is that people visiting Jerusalem from all over the known world commented to one another (probably in Greek, Aramaic or some other lingua franca) that they each heard all of the 120 people praising God in their (the visitors') native tongues.
I have encountered two reports of people from other nations recounting prayers they heard by english-only speakers, in what is presumably "tongues," that was actually heard by the individuals as grammatically correct utterances of prayers in theri native languages. In each case, it was the hearer who knew what was happening, not the speaker. This may be what scripture means when it calls this a "sign for unbelievers."
More common is a phenomena where individuals experience being "taken over" by the Holy Spirit, and stop praying in English and begin making sounds that they do not understand. Often this is associated wit hteh scripture that says, when we do not know what to pray, the Spirit helps us in our weakness with deep groanings that words cannot express. It seems that perhaps this experience is something like when we are at our most desparate and cannot pray for ourselves then the Spirit takes over.
What some may have experienced as a "message and interpretation" of tongues, is even more cloudy in my mind. But we'll save that for another question.

I have also been filled with the holy spirit and have spoken in tongues. Many people don't understand that speaking in tongues is a language that only God understands, yes God understands you. I go to an Assembly of God church and I hear people speaking in tongues a lot and I have also heard somebody tell what they were saying. Those people who are able to tell everybody else what that person said in tongues, usually has a gift from God that allows them to do that. It is Gods way of speaking to us!!

The only real miracle of "speaking is tongues" is to speak a language that you never heard before and suddenly everyone of every different language UNDERSTANDS EVERY WORD OF IT. That is the real gift referred to in the Bible. Everything else is just people putting themselves in a trance and uttering sounds to express something. When someone comes forward with "the interpretation," well, think about it - nobody can PROVE them wrong, not even the person who SPOKE it, so what kind of reality is that? The bible doesn't actually describe speaking in tongues as this type of thing, where one person says gibberish and another interprets it. I mean, what sense does that really make, what is the real purpose of that?
I know people are sincere, but they also should know that it is possible to create self-induced trances and it is also possible to sincerely misinterpret their religious text.
I've seen what you're talking about, I used to be a christian. It seems all very "inspiring" at the time, and I know most of the people sincerely believe in what they are doing, but at the same time, they need to make sure that they are not acting just like a medium and channeling spirits.
I know everyone wants to hear a word from God, but remember, that's why He sent Prophets, coming with instructions and guidance from God to keep us in touch with our Creator. So, lets find it sufficient and comforting to consult with what God sent to get revelations and wisdom.

you're perplexing 2 diverse issues right here.there is the initial baptism in the Holy Spirit the position you receive your prayer language and with this you may pray in tongues any time you elect. In 1st Corinthians 12,it describes the manifestation of the presents of the Spirit.one of them is a message in tongues and the subsequent one after it quite is the translation of that similar message.those are 2 diverse operations of the Holy Spirit.each body who receives the baptism in the Holy Spirit could be in a position to communicate in different tongues.

You're right; there are two types of tongues.
1) You build your faith up by speaking in tongues (Jude 20).
2) You prophesy by one person speaking in public with tongues while another person interprets (1 Cor. 14:5).
One is for your private use, & one is for public use. Both are for building up & encouraging.

Sometimes when we pray we don't know what to say. We utter groanings and language we don't understand. God's Spirit will bear witness with our spirit and interpret what we are saying in our prayers.
God wants our praise and our prayers. I don't think that's much to ask for.

There is nothing supernatural about it. People get all worked up and start babbling gibberish. If you enjoy it, do it. I won't.

If you publicly spoke gibberish, then you publicly spoke gibberish.
