Best ball - means you play your ball all the time. Some people mix up scramble and best ball. Anything that ends with the word ball in the rule book means the player plays their ball all the way. Scotch is alternate shots. One person hits than the other person hits.

Scotch ball is when you have two players who take alternate shots until the ball is finally in the cup. In a tournament where I played this type of golf, only two people made up the team and they played against the field to determine the overall winner.
In another instance, a league was formed among several clubs, and they would play home and away matches with each twosome from each club playing for three points against the opponent in the foursome--one point for the first nine holes; one point for the second nine holes; and one point for the overall 18 holes in match play. I loved every minute of these matches.
