Can you get engaged with something other than a diamond? for example; an emerald, a ruby or perhaps a pearl ring?

Oh heck yeah. You can get engaged with a carbon fiber ring for all it matters. The ring is not the engagement. It is a physical symbol of a promise you have made to each other. Get whatever you want. If you think it is beautiful and it reminds you of the one you love, have a ball.

A diamond ring has become the traditional engagement ring - but that's not to say that's the only ring you can get engaged with. A friend of mine has a topaz dolphin ring for her engagement ring. It's your ring and you are the one who has to wear it for the rest of your life - so get something that you like. Just because the saying goes "diamonds are forever" doesn't mean that you have to have a diamond. I think that whatever ring you and your significant other pick out will be perfect!

My ring is a wonderful Saphire and so is my wedding band. It was not until around the 1920's that the diamond became the "only" wedding stone of choice. They used to be what ever the happy couple could afford or liked best. Also many stores will switch out the stones if you find a setting you like but want the diamond taken out.

Sure!! The diamond is just traditional. And having an engagement ring that's not a diamond, makes the relationship more unique!

No its just a traditonal thing in regards to a dimaond ring my fiancee thought the same he did get me the diamond ring but i would've said yes to any ring so the ring doesn't matter at all as long as you're happy an in love with the person giving it to you

You're going to be wearing that ring for the rest of your life so you might as well get something you like.
My sister had amythest. I got diamonds but not the typical solitare style.
Get what you like and can afford.

You don't even have to have a ring to become engaged. Yes, you can have ANY color, style, shape stone you like. It's a matter of preference!
