They want the consumer to feel better about eating at their restaurant. Also that way the consumer can have a salad instead of the fries to go with their burger.

Because people like getting food fast, but it doesn't have to be greasy and fattening. Maybe the fast food restaurants got the idea because convenience stores have been selling healthier options such as fresh fruit, salads, and yogurt for a very long time.

Hi there, I am an American and when I ate fast food, I always preferred Wendy's over McDonald's or Burger King or anywhere else. Wendy's food is actual meat (explains the grease), where as McDonald's and BK use "mystery meat" with all sorts of nasty fillers and who-knows-what. The chicken breast sandwiches at Wendy's are also all white meat. But like all fast food, it's unhealthy and that's why I gave it up (New Year's resolution). Another reason I liked it is because they allow you to mix and match your "combo meal", like instead of a hamburger and fries..you can get a hamburger with chili or a baked potato. Wendy's is a whole lot better than the other places, IMO.

The salads if you use the dressing can be worse than the burgers especially if you choose one of the permier salads at McDonald's with the crispy chicken.
Caesar Salad with Crispy Chicken 300 calories total, 120 calories from fat, 13 grams of fat.
Newman's Own® Creamy Caesar Dressing 190 calories total, 170 calories from fat, 18 grams of fat.
Total for Caesar salad with the dressing. Total calories 490, calories from fat 290, total fat grams 31.
Big Mac® has 560 calories, 270 fat calories, and 30 grams of fat. If you add the fries it adds to be even more but the Salad is no more healthy than the Big Mac®. Over half of the calories for the salad with the dressing is from fat!
Eating a salad at McDonald's and thinking it is healthy is an illusion!

They are being flexible, trying to provide customers with what they want. It also helps the restaurant's image by making healthier food available.

because of all the hype of fast food being unhealthy and such, they were forced to give healthier options. but, if you look at it, by the time you add on the dressing, deep fried chicken, cheese, and other toppings, you might as well have eaten the burger and fries to begin with.

They are trying to offer something for everyone, so a group of poeple can still got together to one restaurat. Believe me, McDonald's Edamame CHicken Salad is a merre fraction of their overall sales.
