The nikon n55 camera has a Nikon F lense mount along with the Nikon D50.
So yes, your lenses will swap back and forth with no problem. However, lenses made for manual cameras won't accept the zoom feather that digital cameras offer as it's a manual lense as compared to an automatic lense.
The image quality actually won't be affected at all because you are still using Nikon lenses and using a lense on a different camera won't lessen the quality of the lense at all.

The majority of the lenses on this page will fit your camera. Remember, you need lenses for a Nikon F mount camera.

Most used lenses here will also work on your Nikon D50 and Nikon N55. Remember, before you purchase a lense, make sure that is will work on an F mount Nikon camera body.

First off you fail to state what lens you have. For the most part if it is a Nikon lens and it works on your N55 it will work on your D50.
If it has an AF after the number it will fit Nikon digital or film SLRs. Nikon makes no distinction between digital or film for the majority of its lenses.
The first couple of posters are either retarded or are trying to mislead you. (more light sensitive?)
D50 Lens Mount:
Nikon F mount (with AF coupling and AF contacts)
N55 Lens Mount:

Although you can use the older lenses, you will get much better results from the newer digital lenses (because of the features). If you can only afford the camera now, and not the lens, use an old lens temporarily until you can afford one of the new ones.
Oh also, the focal length will be different, so a normal lens for a film camera will be slightly telephoto on a digital camera.
And for Martin B...what exactly is "retarded" or "misleading" about what I posted? I reported you for abuse, by the way. I hope the other poster you insulted does as well.

I am not personally familiar with Nikon gear but, I have heard conflicting answers to this question, depending on the maker, model, type of lenses (manual or auto-focus) and age of lenses. I know that my Pentax (Asahi) lenses are interchangeable from older SLR to modern digital bodies but, I really can't speak for Nikon, Olympus, Canon, etc. My advice would be to take your SLR lenses to the camera store and ask to try them. That's the beauty of digital, you'll know instantly. I'm sure the store wouldn't mind if it meant a potential sale for them. If you're buying a digital camera body sight unseen however, (e.g. on eBay) then my advice would be to go straight to the source first- email Nikon with your lens and digital body specs. You could be out some bucks otherwise. Good luck.

I have heard that there is a special coating on the Digital Lenses (because they are more light sensitive) to prevent ghosting.
