the Port of Calais becuase that is the narrowest point in the English Channel; Dover (UK) IS really close. Opperation Fortitude was the name given to the plan that served to distract the germans and made them belive the invasion would be at calais instead. The Brits captured all the spies in germany and made them send fake messages to germany telling them of the fake invasion. The Allies put fake dummies into the water putting "invasion" plans near the port of calais.

There was a very elaborate deception plan to convince the Germans that the invasion was going to take place in the Pas de Calais.
This included stationing an entire Army group around Dover and a great cloak and dagger mission whereby the body of a civilian who had died of Pneumonia (which could be mistaken for drowning) was dressed as a British officer and released from a submarine off the Spanish coast so it looked like he had been drowned following being shot down.
A stroy was circulated about a missing transport plane.
He had a briefcase chained to his wrist which contained plans for an Invasion around Calais and when he washed up on the beach the papers were read by the neutral Spanish and the details passed to their German friends before the body and the papers were handed over to the British consul.
General Montgomery also had a double, who was a film actor spend time in Gibralter in the days leading up to the invasion as the Germans would not expect an invasion whilst he was away from England. This was made into a film called "I was Montys double" in which the actual actor starred as himself.

Most of the Germans thought Pas de Calais, most notably Hitler and the German High Command. They even thought the Normandy invasion was a diversion during the crucial first days when a counterattack would've caught the allies bogged down on the beaches. Reserve panzer divisions were kept in the Pas de Calais area rather than being sent to counterattack the Normandy invasions.

the Pas De Calalais across the channel from Dover england. As a matter of a fact George Patton was given command of the "invading army" that never exsisted. The Germans figured that since he was there and they firgured he was our best general then naturally that must be where the main invasion was going to take place.

In addition to "assigning" Gen Patton to the "fake" invasion army, the Allies placed fake tanks, planes, trucks, empty tents and other equipment for the German reconnaissance planes to photograph. They also assigned radio operators to send fake messages, paperwork and such for the German spies to see activity, adding to the the biggest bluff of the war.
