By land of the free, they mean that the people in America are in a democracy. They can run for government, vote, and they have a lot more rights then people ruled under a monarchy do. Not all nations are perfect, but some other countrys have it far worse then America. Like the guy above me said, every country has problems.

Thank God there is someone out there who is smart! I have spent a lot of time researching immigrants and people of other races in America and I was shocked. I new Americans were raccist jerks, but there were so many times they have crossed the line.
Here are some that you forgot:
in the 1800's-early 1900's the Irish immigrants were not allowed to work in any jobs, except jobs that were too hard for the average American to do, such as a migrant worker, or a maid, or a laundress. During the case of the Lizzie Borden murder, the charge was put on an irish maid, because everone refused to believe an American would ever murdor their own parents.

Jail is jail, America is free alright, but remember some people go to far with that freedom, so they will be jailed more. Ideally, we are not the land of the free, we are the world police, the flag that we revere in the homeland is seen as a symbol of fear and tyranny to all who are not American. This land of the free was built on the backs of slaves. We acclaim our culture is the best, and therefore all else follows behind us. Freedom fighters are not Leaders. freedom fighters are always the speakers, the advocates, the rebels. Freedom is not possible. Not even in America. Dont be fooled. Americans are free to do what they will, but no one else can enjoy the same freedom americans enjoy, and as long as this cultural and militant 'empire' exists, Americans will always be tyrants hiding behind a flag they acclaim to be a symbol of freedom.

Dude, they are not americans. They broke American law to come over here. When they are found out, they are sent back to where they came from. Immigration is good when kept low. There is a process to become an American. You seem to like to put America down.
then I got a word for you.
Leave
I am sure there are other countries more to your liking
Go
bye

In all actuality we are losing freedoms day by day. Today the supreme court upheld no knock searches. Since 911 everything is moving towards a socialist government and no longer a democracy. Read the Communist Manifesto by Karl Marx and you will clearly see what I mean.

No one is free! And your current Fascist government is trying to take any freedom you have away from you!
Those weren't Japanese we put in Internment camps in WWII, which we stole all their grape orchards and homes!!
Those were Americans who were born here with Japanese ancestry!
Wonder what those Orchards are worth today and who owns them?

It is the lyric to a song regarding the civil liberties such as the freedom of speech you are exercising right now.
If you don't like it, don't use the term.
And, actually, we did intern German immigrants during WWII. You might want to check your facts. http://www.foitimes.com/internment/SJMN.htm

Very good question.BTW I'm white, but it doesn't help me legalize although I pay all my taxes...
During WW2 German POWs in US could dine in fine restaurants while guarded by black US GIs, who weren't even allowed to get in the same restaurants, so they had to stay out!
And while German soldiers quetly dined, innocent Japanese US citizens were in concentration camps in US!
Land of the free my ***!
US national anthem makes me laugh!

Let's add to that: wire-tapping its citizens, holding "detainees" without due process. The U.S. used to be a champion for human rights and now we're seeking justification and rewriting the rules on why torture is acceptable?!
I'm not even going to mention the thousands of Iraqi civilians that have been killed.
