It depends if it is sugar-free or not. Sugar-free gum will actually help reduce plaque because chewing the gum will remove plaque. Gum with sugar in it will "feed" the bacteria and help them grow.

The simple answer is NO. Chewing gum increases salivary production. This in turn helps to clean your teeth. Think of it this way. When you chew gum your mouth is more watery. Since your mouth has more water, it will help keep your teeth clean. The best is if you chew sugarless gum, since then not only do you decrase plaque build up, your teeth wont be exposed to sugars as well, which is always good in helping tooh decay!

sugar free gum actually helps to prevent plaque buildup...it is good to chew it after meals when you cannot brush. gum with sugar is, obviously, not good for your teeth.
