This could be due to allergies, an ingrown eyelash, or a foreign object in the eye. Due to the possibility that a foreign object in the eye could permanently damage the dog's vision (not to mention this is EXTREMELY painful), the dog needs to get to the vet ASAP!

More information is needed. What kind of dog? Does it spend a lot of time out doors? How old? Did this just start? Any discharge?

One thing that couldn't hurt is to get a sterile eye wash and flush them out a couple of times a day and see if they look better. If they do it is probably just dust and airborne debris, if they don't look better you need to go to the vet.

without any other info it sounds like it could be allergies. you might want to call your vet and ask what a safe dose for your dog's weight would be and get him/her started on benedryl.
dogs are often prone to the same seasonal allergies people are, and for most, the treatment is also the same....
if it gets worse or doesn't clear within a day or so of starting the benedryl, i'd defintely take him/her in for a check-up

How old is your dog? He/she could have conjunctivitus, or something as simple as allergies. It is allergy season..I would wash eyes with warm water washcloth, at least twice today..If not better by tomorrow, take to the vet.
