They sure do! They run under the bed if they are indoors, and run further away when outdoors. The vacuum makes high pitched sounds that hurts cats ears. Some dogs run from them too, but I know of dogs that chase and bite them. I even had a dog that would pick up the front of the vacuum to move it, while it was running! Really funny dog!! And she would get meaner with the vacuum if it 'moved' her toys around!

I used to have a cat who would curl her tongue and hiss at the vacuum, and attack it with her paw. Then if it came any closer, she would take off like a shot. She would never actually hide, but sit there and watch the vacuum and hiss every now and then. I have to say, it's one of the funniest things I've ever seen.

My cat is long gone the second he sees the vacuum. It makes cleaning the house such a big pain because you have to do one or two rooms and then hide the vacuum and move him .

My cat Stewie is very smart. He recognizes when the vacuum is going to come out when I start DUSTING the coffee table! He associates that with...."the vacuum must be next", and hides under my bed covers. The cutest thing. :)

Cats & dogs are afraid of it because vacuums emit loud sounds and some of the sounds we don't hear, but they do and they are startled by this.
If you walk up to a cat and scream loudly, its basically the same effect... they'll be startled.

Most cats are afraid of things like that. It's bigger than they are and makes a whole lot of noise. Of course I did once have one who just didn't care, but he was the exception to the rule.

Every time I use a hair dryer, my cat comes up for me to aim the dryer at her and stretches out her neck and closes her eyes till I turn it off.
