Well. I think it's an American thing. BUT You can now get a salad just about anywhere.

Most credit the Italians with the dish...the word comes from the french Salade....definitely not an American invention

Tender greens have been eaten by stone age people wherever they lived. It wasn't eaten first in America because humans came to America long after they were found in many other places.
