I just read this in 'The Way of Chuang Tzu'. I absolutely love this message! And unfortunately I agree with it...unfortunately because I have a tendency to talk too much, so you know what that means. LOL

Ah great words by Lao Tzu, good words but not always true. I think he meant by it a view similar to that of Socrates, “monon oida, oti ouden gignosko” or in Latin “Scio me nihil scire.” Socrates (I know that I know nothing.) By this logic it is the fool that speaks as though he knows something. The sage therefore knows he doesn't' know and thus makes no claims instead listening and keeping his mouth shut. I find this to be true that it's usually the fools that do the most talking in the chat rooms, I wait for the ones that don't say as much, but when they do speak they have something to say. These are the people that I pay more attention to, my grandpa was a man of few words and when he spoke everyone listened for a reason. He listened and thought well and it came out when he did speak. This is what i hope to do in the future instead of rambling on as I'm doing now.

Good thing we all type instead of speaking, then. It's not true, no, not in the litteral sense. If it were it would make everything ever spoken aloud to be a lie.

Hmn. Quite possibly. "Those who know" may not speak because they do not want to be swarmed by others and want the knowledge all to themselves. While, likewise, "Those who speak" may not know because they just want everyone's attention and want to sound intelligent.

This is why in story you have characters who are smart and silent and characters who are stupid and loud. I suppose the same COULD apply to life, but, there is more variability in life.

If it's true, then those who know had better speak up before ignorance gets us all killed.

As a rule this is true in a majority instances.the simple fact is that if you know, it is not possible to convey in words .If you speak, then you dont exactly know or you would understand that words are not sufficient to convey the knowledge.

This might help:

He who knows not and knows not that he knows not is a fool; shun him.

He who knows not and knows that the knows not is a child; teach him.

He who knows and knows not that he knows is asleep; wake him.

He who knows and knows that he knows is wise; follow him.
