will these dog fighting owners go for next? Could it be the same breed as my dog and then they ban him? This concerns me because I do not want these people taking a loving dog like the lab or some other breed and make their name go bad. Why dont they just make harsher punishment for the owners that breed dogs like this? They should take full responsibility for what they do instead of banning a breed.

Absolutely right! Write your congressmen and senators and let them know you don't approve of banning any breeds. Each dog should be judged on its merits - a vicious dog that its owners can't control should be put down whether it's a Chihuahua or a Poodle or a Pit Bull.

CA is allowing individual cities, towns, etc to enact their own laws targetting specific breeds. BSL (breed specific legislation) is a major problem among owners of "vicious" breeds. It usually starts with pit bulls...but it will move on to other breeds. Italy has banned somewhere around 90 breeds of dogs....even the little herding dog corgi! It most likely won't focus on labs BUT what if your dog is a lab mix? Perhaps mixed with boxer? It might look like a pit bull....YOU will have to prove otherwise. With BSL it is guilty until proven innocent. These laws usually refer to "pit bulls" or any mix that possesses strong traits of them. Which is what? Short hair, medium sized, somewhat blocky build.....that could encompass any number of breeds. Here, have fun trying to determine which dog is a "pit bull" and you will see how difficult it is for the average person: http://www.pitbullsontheweb.com/petbull/findpit.html.
You mention that you fear that they will take a loving breed such as a lab and spoil their name....that is exactly what has happened to the American Pit Bull Terrier. Before idiots started using them as an ego boost and the fear mongering media made them out to be monsters they were one of the most beloved all American breeds. Pit bull enthusiasts are wethering out the storm that a few irresponsible people have brought upon this wonderful breed. We are working to restore thier good name and end BSL of all kinds and for all breeds. And enlilghtened enthusiasts of other breeds are supporting us, they know that their breed could very well be next. We have to stop BSL and the ignorance behind it before it is too late.
The punishments should be directed toward the irresponsible owners of any breed. It's not the dogs fault, you have to look at the other end of the leash. Targeting a breed does nothing, it breaks apart families and punishes responsible owners.

What needs to happen is that people that are ignorant to a breed need to do their homework and find out about the breed before they start to condemn! I own 2 pit bulls and I have 2 kids. Most people would be appalled at that statement and to them I say screw you you know nothing about my dogs! And I did my homework before I got my dogs and found that pits are quite kid friendly. As a matter of fact if you go back you will find that these "vicious, kid hating" dogs are used with children in TV and movIEs all the time. ie.. The Little Rascals,& Cheaper by the Dozen. But until people are held responsible for how they train and treat their animals the animals will be victimized. I firmly beleive in "judge the deed, not the breed" . The self righteous people that have nothing better to do than run their mouths and complain about things that they don't know about , need to learn that before you open your mouth and spew forth infinite dribble, should check your facts and talk to people who live with the "condemmed" breeds every day! People talk about fighting for animal rights, how is it right to " ban" a breed? You are commiting a living thing to extinction!

Are you sure they are talking BANNING the breed for the whole state? Pet ownership and dog fighting are TWO different things entirely. Unless you dog's breed is very aggressive, why would they BAN that breed. I will guess you have a Rottweiler. They make nice pets.
Registering the dogs let's people (AKC or govt) know who has which dogs, where there are, who might be breeding them, etc. Unless you plan on fighting your dog there should be NO PROBLEM

Every animal owner should be concerned about BSL. Any breed is but a bite away from being on a list. Even Frenchies, Bostons, and Keeshonds are on lists.

HSUS, Peta and the rest of the 'animal rights' groups are working very hard to end ALL pet ownership. If we want to be able to continue to enjoy our pets, we ALL need to be fighting the 'animal rights' groups. That mess in LA will be coming YOUR way next! Get involved if you love your dogs.

they have allready banned the breed ( bull terriers ) in many locals, and having them is a liability for some insurance companies and will drop your home coverage if you own one.
they will proably go for other breeds that can be viewed as vicious, usch as Rottweilers, German Shepards, Persa Canarias, et all. Unfortunately it's the same group of people who ban guns for the same reason, fear of them, lack of knowlege and inaccurate information , propegated myths and the media often lead to such enactment of such legislation by feel gooders in power, common sense is in very short supply in all levels of government, and to some degree the voting populace

i do not know about other states. however, i live in CA in the la area. i was told by my vet that all dogs that are not being shown, or is not a working dog (agility), must be fixed, registered, and micro-chipped.

i own a doberman pinscher.. they need to punish the deed and not the breed!
