Depends on the size of the cavity. Superficial (pin point) cavities require very little drilling and you should feel no pain whatsoever.
For more severe caries (decay), you may want to have lidocaine injections to numb the nerve. These can be uncomfortable and you may feel a slight burning sensation from the lido, but it will pass and it feels better than no anesthetic at all. Trust me.
You may even have a dentist who uses lasers to remove decay. From what I understand, there's no pain involved and no need for local anesthesia.
Some dentists use other techniques to put you in the right state of mind but I've never personally come across this.
In the end, if you don't get the filling(s), the infection, abscess and pain you will ultimately experience will be far worse than anything a dentist will do to you.

no, not really I've had tons they may hurt for a couple of days after but take tylenol or motrin for the pain if any. The dentist won't give you any great pain medicene for it because you don't need it. Don't listen to everyone else here, maybe they just had a bad dentist, it happens. If the dentist shakes your cheeks( if the filling is in the back of your mouth or side) while putting the numbing med. you should be pain free and not feel a thing while getting the filling.

no, not at all. The numbing may be a bit uncomfortable but shoudnt hurt. often your dentist will put a local anasthetic on with a cotton bud so that you wont feel much if any of the injection. If you are still nervous tell your dentist and he/she will be able to help you ease your nerves

No, not really. I love my dentist. I'm scared of needles and he always give me nitrous oxide before he brings out the novacaine. I am so relaxed that the only time I notice is because of the noises and/or pressure.

Not usually. If the dentist thinks it will, he or she will inject novocaine to deaden sensation. No big deal. And if you ignore your teeth, you will be in a world of hurt. Good luck.

Wont lie to you, it sure does. Though not at the time of filling thanks to sterilizers. Had one while in the university. You feel the lost after the effect of the sterilizer x gone.
However never try removing any, The orphaned tissues in the gum will hunt you for years.
Try prevention. stiop candies and sweet please.

No, but the shot they put in your mouth to numb you hurts a little. It feels like a "pinch".
