Who is Muhammad (PBUH)?

Muhammad (PBUH), was born in Makkah in the year 570, at a time when Christianity was not yet fully established in Europe. Since his father died before his birth, and his mother shortly afterwards, he was raised by his uncle from the respected tribe of Quraysh. As he grew up, he became known for his truthfulness, generosity and sincerity, so that he was sought after for his ability to arbitrate in disputes. The historians describe him as calm and meditative.
Muhammad (PBUH) was of a deeply religious nature, and had long detested the decadence of his society. It became his habit to meditate from time to time in the Cave of Hira near the summit of Jabal al-Nur, the 'Mountain of Light' near Makkah.

How did Muhammad (PBUH) become a prophet and a messenger of God?
At the age of 40, while engaged in a meditative retreat, Muhammad (PBUH) received his first revelation from God through the Angel Gabriel. This revelation, which continued for twenty-three years, is known as the Quran.
The Mountain of Light where Gabriel came to Prophet Muhammad (PBUH).
As soon as he began to recite the words he heard from Gabriel, and to preach the truth which God had revealed to him, he and his small group of followers suffered bitter persecution, which grew so fierce that in the year 622 God gave them the command to emigrate. This event, the Hijra, 'migration', in which they left Makkah for the city of Madinah some 260 miles to the north, marks the beginning of the Muslim calendar.
After several years, the Prophet and his followers were able to return to Makkah, where they forgave their enemies and established Islam definitively. Before the Prophet died at the age of 63, the greater part of Arabia was Muslim, and within a century of his death Islam had spread to Spain in the West and as far East as China.

Examples of the Prophet`s sayings
The Prophet said:

'God has no mercy on one who has no mercy for others.'

'None of you truly believes until he wishes for his brother what he wishes for himself.'

'He who eats his fill while his neighbor goes without food is not a believer. '

'The truthful and trusty businessman is associated with the prophets the saints, and the martyrs.'

'Powerful is not he who knocks the other down, indeed powerful is he who controls himself in a fit of anger. '

'God does not judge according to your bodies and appearances but He scans your hearts and looks into your deeds.'

'A man walking along a path felt very thirsty. Reaching a well he descended into it, drank his fill and came up. Then he saw a dog with its tongue hanging out, trying to lick up mud to quench its thirst. The man saw that the dog was feeling the same thirst as he had felt so he went down into the well again and filled his shoe with water and gave the dog a drink. God forgave his sins for this action.' The Prophet was asked: 'Messenger of God, are we rewarded for kindness towards animals?' He said, 'There is a reward for kindness to every living thing.'

To to the person who said we do not know if he existed: Proof lies in Hadith, the sayings of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). The fact that Islam exists today is proof that Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon) existed.

He was a kind man. One of his quotes was when he was telling people to help the poor, a man said I do not have much to give, the Prophet told him, even a smile can be charity. He was known for never passing by any one without giving a warm smile. Even his enemies envied and respected him. There was a Jewish man who would throw garbage on him while he prayed to the One God and the Prophet's (SAW) followers wanted to kill him, but he was patient. Until one day when the Prophet (SAW) walked by his house and this time the Jewish man was not there to throw pig intestines and stones at him as usual so the Prophet (SAW) became worried and went to his house. The Jewish man's wife was shocked and asked for the reason for the visit and the Prophet (SAW) said her husband was not there to disrespect him that day. The woman went to her husband dying of sickness on his bed and told him of the Prophet (SAW). The Prophet (SAW) came and the Jewish man cried and said, only a True Prophet (SAW) could have such morals and became a Muslim and died. You could watch the American movie about Prophet Muhammad (SAW) called 'The Message' w/ Anthony Quin and you can order it from Netflix and it gives a limited picture of Prophet Muhammad (SAW). Why do you think the world gets so upset upon the slightest disrespect to this Holy Prophet (SAW) even mentioned in the Bible (genesis) ~from the seed of Ishmael I will create a great nation w/ 12 princes~ His grave is in Medina, Arabia and his descendants live till today, including myself and are called Sayeds. We each have documents call Shajara's which is kind of like a family tree that goes back all the way to prophet Abraham and even farther. Those who deny, only follow their opinions and do not investigate any other possibilities and facts of life, even in their own religion.

First, we dont even know for sure whether he existed. There is no independant account of Muhammad, like the records of jewish tribes saying "Muhammad now wants to murder us all, we are getting killed everywhere in Arabia".

However, the Islam itself is supposedly a kinda autobiography of Muhammad.

Basically he was a warlord. Muslims dont like that word, but that doesnt change the fact he was a leader of a large independant army. So he amases and army and starts making up "ayas" or verses, daily, and claiming they came from Allah, delivered by angel Jibriel.

After 20 some years, the Quran was supposedly completed in this piece meal fashion. The reality is, the Caliph Utheman, long after Muhammad, slapped together what we today call the Quran. The oldest Quran is still 400 years AFTER Muhammad.

This is very significant because as you probably know, Muslims worship their book like no humans in all of history ever worshiped a book. Its inconcievable to think that, had the Quran really been written in Muhammads supposed time, that we wouldnt have many many perfectly preserved copies from that time.

This is a very general question. You have to be more specific. What eactly do you mean? do you mean his cons or pros? he had a lot of both. Some people see him as the best man has ever been created, while other see him as an evil leader. You will ahve to read the facts and judge by yourself.

Simplified version: He went spelunking in a cave, had a vision where he saw the Arch Angel Gabriel, Gabriel said he was a prophet (basically) and then he left the cave and started preaching and stuff.

For the longer version, look to Wikipedia.

You may be an atheist or an agnostic or you may belong to any of the religious denominations that exist in the world today. You may have been a Communist or a believer in democracy and freedom. No matter what you are, and no matter what your religious and political beliefs, personal and social habits happen to be— YOU STILL MUST KNOW THIS MAN!

Muhammad was forty years old, and it was the fifth consecutive year since his annual retreats, when one night towards the end of the month of Ramadan, an angel came to visit him, and announced that God had chosen him as His messenger to all mankind.

"My choice of Muhammad to lead the list of the world's most influential persons may surprise some readers and may be questioned by others, but he was the only man in history who was supremely successful on both the religious and secular level."
Michael H. Hart , THE 100: A RANKING OF THE MOST INFLUENTIAL PERSONS IN HISTORY , New York: Hart Publishing Company, Inc., 1978, p. 33.

"Philosopher, orator, apostle, legislator, warrior, conqueror of ideas, restorer of rational dogmas, of a cult without images; the founder of twenty terrestrial empires and of one spiritual empire, that is Muhammad. As regards all standards by which human greatness may be measured, we may well ask, is there any man greater than he?" Lamartine, HISTOIRE DE LA TURQUIE, Paris, 1854, Vol. II, pp. 276-277.

Prophet Muhammad was born in Makkah, present-day Saudi Arabia around 570 C.E. He is the model for humanity of all walks of life to follow until the Last Hour. God sent him as a mercy for the worlds.

In an era when mankind was steeped in a web of ignorance unparallelled in human history...
When the most inhumane acts had become the norm of the day; When daughters were buried alive and widowed mothers made the property of their sons...
Then Allah Ta'ala favoured mankind by sending upon them the greatest benefactor to humanity...
The choicest and most honoured slave of Allah...
The Master of both Humankind and Jinnaat...
The greatest personality to ever grace the surface of the earth Muhammad (peace be upon him).

Holy Qur'an declares: "And we relate unto you from the incidents of the Prophets, that whereby we strengthen your heart, and in it has come to you the truth, advice and remembrance for the believers. "

MIRACULOUS

His birth was indeed miraculous. During the delivery of Rasulullah (sallallahu alaihi wasallam) a resplendent light appeared which brightened the east and west and what was between them. An earthquake shook the palace of the Zoroastrian emperor of Persia, bringing down structures and decorations. The religious fire which burned continuously for thousands of years in the temple of Persia was suddenly extinguished. The world was on the threshold of an unprecedented revolution which would first transform the Arabs from being the most downtrodden nation to becoming stars of guidance.

The commencement of the Divine Inspiration to Allah's Apostle was in the form of good dreams which came true like bright day light, and then the love of seclusion was bestowed upon him. He used to go in seclusion in the cave of Hira where he used to worship (Allah alone) continuously for many days before his desire to see his family. He used to take with him the journey food for the stay and then come back to (his wife) Khadija to take his food like-wise again till suddenly the Truth descended upon him while he was in the cave of Hira. The angel came to him and asked him to read. The prophet replied, "I do not know how to read. The prophet added, "The angel caught me (forcefully) and pressed me so hard that I could not bear it any more. He then released me and again asked me to read and I replied, 'I do not know how to read.' Thereupon he caught me again and pressed me a second time till I could not bear it any more. He then released me and again asked me to read but again I replied, 'I do not know how to read (or what shall I read)?' Thereupon he caught me for the third time and pressed me, and then released me and said, 'Read in the name of your Lord, who has created (all that exists) has created man from a clot. Read! And your Lord is the Most Generous." (96.1, 96.2, 96.3) Then Allah's Apostle returned with the Inspiration and with his heart beating severely. Then he went to Khadija bint Khuwailid and said, "Cover me! Cover me!" They covered him till his fear was over and after that he told her everything that had happened and said, "I fear that something may happen to me." Khadija replied, "Never! By Allah, Allah will never disgrace you. You keep good relations with your Kith and kin, help the poor and the destitute, serve your guests generously and assist the deserving calamity-afflicted ones." Khadija then accompanied him to her cousin Waraqa bin Naufal bin Asad bin 'Abdul 'Uzza, who, during the PreIslamic Period became a Christian and used to write the writing with Hebrew letters. He would write from the Gospel in Hebrew as much as Allah wished him to write. He was an old man and had lost his eyesight. Khadija said to Waraqa, "Listen to the story of your nephew, O my cousin!" Waraqa asked, "O my nephew! What have you seen?" Allah's Apostle described whatever he had seen. Waraqa said, "This is the same one who keeps the secrets (angel Gabriel) whom Allah had sent to Moses. I wish I were young and could live up to the time when your people would turn you out." Allah's Apostle asked, "Will they drive me out?" Waraqa replied in the affirmative and said, "Anyone (man) who came with something similar to what you have brought was treated with hostility; and if I should remain alive till the day when you will be turned out then I would support you strongly." But after a few days Waraqa died and the Divine Inspiration was also paused for a while. Narrated Jabir bin 'Abdullah Al-Ansari while talking about the period of pause in revelation reporting the speech of the prophet "While I was walking, all of a sudden I heard a voice from the sky. I looked up and saw the same angel who had visited me at the cave of Hira' sitting on a chair between the sky and the earth. I got afraid of him and came back home and said, 'Wrap me (in blankets).' And then Allah revealed the following Holy Verses (of Quran): 'O you (i.e. Muhammad)! wrapped up in garments!' Arise and warn (the people against Allah's Punishment),... up to 'and desert the idols.' (74.1-5) After this the revelation started coming strongly, frequently and regularly."
