Sorry but this may be long.

The first thing to consider is what motivates your dog. A dog that is food motivated is much easier to train than one that is motivated by toys or attention. I would start with treats. Try to find one that the dog can chew quickly so their attention is not diverted for too long. Hot dog weiners are very effective. Let him have just a nibble of it rather than giving him the whole thing. Peanut butter on a spoon works good as well. Just let them have a lick.

Don't start with sit. Use the treat to first get the dogs attention. Place yourself close to your dog. Show them the treat and let them have just a nibble. Then pull the treat away. Say a key word like "Look" while you move the treat to about a foot in front of your nose. When you have their attention, give them another nibble. Continue doing this about eight to ten times and then STOP. A few hours later do this again. I would do this just a couple of days and then move on to the much more interesting "sit". "Look" will teach your dog that paying attention to what you say will lead to a reward. This realization is the most important thing in training.

Sit can be done a few different ways. I used this method.

Use "Look" to get your dog's attention. Once you have their attention, don't give them the treat. Instead, raise the treat slowly over and then gradually behind their head. Hopefully your dog will start to naturally sit back to get the treat. You may have to work with them a few minutes to get this technique down. Once they sit, give them the treat and praise them. Do this a few times and then stop like before. Try again in a few hours and over the next few days. You can immediately start using the word "sit" while you teach them this or gradually work it in.

Stay is simple but it takes more patience. You want them to get "Sit" down before you try, then you are ready for stay. Simply get your dog in the sit position. And then tell them "stay". A second later give them the treat. If they move, don't give them the treat. Continue doing this over a few days and slowly extend the time to a few seconds and then longer. Just remember to stop like before and try again in a few hours. Eventually they will stay for as long as you want. Just don't rush it.

Here is some additional advice. Don't give the dog mixed directions. Always praise them after you complete a session. No session should last more than 5 to 10 minutes in the beginning. Your dog will just lose interest and so will you. Do not get mad. If you start to lose your patience, stop and try again in a few hours. Reward them with play time after they are done. It won't be long before you see a big improvement in behavior.

I hope this helps. And sorry its so long.

He's only 4 months old. Labradors are intelligent dogs with eagerness to please. If you cannot figure out the training yourself, most petstores have a puppy training class, just for that reason. You should look it up.

he's probably being a normal puppy. It takes time and patience to teach your dog the things you want him to learn. Just reward him when he does what you want him to, and then he will associate the correct behavior with the reward. The rewards doesn't have to be food (but it works if he's a chow hound), it can be your praise and affection.
