We have a licence, and all is legal but I am looking for some tips to make it a really good collection.
Any suggestions would be appreciated.

I would do fundraisers like car washes, yard sales, etc, instead of just trying to collect off the street.

People should only donate to charities that they know - too many folks are out there ripping off gullible people who want to help. You should have a printout exactly showing what your organization does to help animals and how much of the money you collect goes to that purpose. Organizations like PETA often have very high "administrative costs" and very little actually helps the animals.

Try having a raffle or a "dog wash" to raise money and get local high school kids to help.

Most money raised by HSUS, Peta, DDAL, and many other 'animal rights' groups is spent on fundraising and anti-dog legislation. VERY little goes to actually help any animals. HSUS is currently under investigation.

It is a great thing to help the animals, just make sure it will actually help animals. Your local HS is a much better bet, as they are not affiliated with HSUS. Or give to one of the groups that are fighting for the right to have animals like grannies against Peta or NAIA.

Good luck with the fundraising!

grab a trestle table or just a small table you can take to where you are doing it, get some leaflets and stuff about your charity. Maybe have tabards. Have a mascot , like a stuffed toy or someones dog (obviously only a sociable dog and take water etc.)

To make it fun for you as it can get boring set up a competition between everyone that is doing as to who can raise the most money. If someone brings some food it can have a really fun atmosphere.

Try taking a long piece of masking tape and sticking it on the sidewalk at a shopping centre -sticky side up. Ask people to stick their spare change onto it for charity (name the charity), I call it a "money-mile" it works very well because people feel they are doing more than just handing over their money, they are getting involved and it is really fun when lots of people get involved

why not arrange to do a sponsored dog walk? you could also walk dogs for your working neighbours at a small cost. the monies will soon add up! a little gardening for those who will contribute would help both the monies and the neighbours. good luck.
