Possibly because you are still and relaxed. The same thing happens to me when I'm sitting as a passenger in a car for more than a few minutes.

You were probably tired and did not realize it until you slowed down and relaxed, which brings me to my theory of why books look the way they do. Picture lying in your cave reading the latest issue of 'Better Hunting and Gathering', you fall asleep and that damned stone tablet smashes your nose again! This prompted the discovery of softer material and a design which allows the scroll, book or magazine to gently drape over the face, protecting the nose.

Your neck might be tilted too far forward decreasing blood flow to your head. Try holding the book higher. I suggest reading at a desk and resting your forearms on table while you hold the book. The farther away you hold your book, the less your head tilts.

Reading is a natural sleep aid for most people. It is because you are using eye mucles that dont really get worked much in normal day to day activity and it slows your brain down to try and focus.
