The single-lens reflex (SLR) is a type of camera that uses a movable mirror placed between the lens and the film to project the image seen through the lens to a matte focusing screen. SLRs typically have removable lenses to allow different focal lengths and aperatures and take higher quality photos
a "point and shoot" (non SLR) camera is typically smaller in size and uses a pass through viewfinder on top of the camera and a fixed lens

SLR stands for Single Lens Reflex which means that when you look through the view-finder (eye-piece) of the camera you are actually looking through the lens itself and seeing exactly what the 'camera' sees. Then, when you press the shutter button to take the picture a mirror inside the camera pops up out of the way as the shutter opens to let the light (image) in when the film is exposed to make the negative. With other 35mm cameras (non SLR) you look through a fixed eye-piece which is not really the true image you will capture but, rather only a good approximation of what the camera (film) 'will' see. The proof of this is when you get your prints back from the processor and see your thumb in the middle of the photo. You didn't know your thumb was there because, it was in front of the camera 'lens' but not the 'viewfinder', when you snapped the shutter. Hope this helps you!

SLR is Single Lens Reflex. It means you see through the lens. It is a higher quality camera, but you can find them for around $300 I think. I had a nice Pentax a few years ago. Now you can get SLR digital cameras, and they are very nice--also no film developing costs.

SLR, stands for Single Lens Reflex, that means that the viefinder actually is viewing through the lens, but it also means "if you saw it you didn't get it. Anotherwords when the shot is actually taken the reflex mirror must block your view while exposing the film!
