It was a mother, her daughter and the daughters daughter.
Grandmother, mother (who is also a daughter) and daughter/granddaughter. (3 people/3 fish.)

there was only three because there was a grand mother a mother and a daughter. The mother was the daughter to the grand mother and she was the mother to the mother and the daughter was the daughter to the mother.

NO, don't you all see? They weren't mom, daughter and granddaughter! That's the OLD answer. The NEW answer is that one of the fish they caught ate the other!

One of them put back the fish they caught, because the don't like to eat fish they just love the sport of catching them.
