Southern California if you like the hot weather, Northern California if you prefer a cooler climate

Tough question. Northern and Southern California really cannot be compared - they are like two different states! There are perks to each!

Southern California, as most know, has the palm trees, warmer weather, Disneyland, Universal, nice beaches, and lots of touristy vacation spots.
However, Northern California has San Fransisco, the State's Capitol, a rich history, Yosemite National Park, Colder beach areas, but still beautiful (Monterey, for example, which has a wonderful aquarium!), and the Wine Country, Napa Valley and Sanoma, which is a must see.

I'm originally from Central California so I really can't pick for you. I say, visit both! :)

This is like comparing apples and oranges.

The fact to the matter is the North and South compliment each other. And the reason why California is considered "the Golden State" throughout the world is precisely because of this incredible diversity.

Southern California provides the tax base (large population), industry muscle (the military, production of goods, trade infastructure like ports), glamorous salesmanship, and cultural propaganda machine (via Hollywood, Disneyland, the shopping mall, car fetishism, etc.)

Northern California provides the natural resources (including the all important lumber, ore reserves, and water), technological innovation (Silicon Valley, bio-medical production), political ruthlessness, and intellectual prowess (Berkeley, Stanford, social revolutions like the new economy, post-modernism, free speech, etc.)

There's always a fringe group of radicals that keep on talking about a divorce along the "Fresno line". But the reality is the divide is mostly in our heads... and if presented with a real referendum, I think most of us would rather have one strong state than two weak ones.

I grew up in SoCal, lived almost 20 years in NorCal (San Francisco), and am now back in SoCal (San Diego).

They both have their good and bad points -- Los Angeles is a complete waste of space, though, which tips the balance to Northern. More open space, a more liberal attitude...

The south has the weather going for it, and San Diego is just drop-dead beautiful, but too many ultra-conservatives down here :( First time I went to vote after moving to San Diego, the lady at the polling place actually said, "Oh, a democrat -- we don't get many of those here!" ;-)

i'd not say that No Cal is more desirable suitable than So Cal, yet aspects of it are quite impressive. i appreciate going to San Francisco, it has a distinct vibe than l. a. or any city the following, and the elements is distinct, cooler. besides the indisputable fact that that's even more desirable intense priced (slightly) than l. a. for a similar existence kind. i opt for to stay in l. a., because commonplace I like it to cities in No Cal, yet many aspects of No Cal are very impressive. you should visit San Francisco, Berkeley, etc sometime. you'll discover that there are quite some transformations between cities, similar to in the l. a. area. sturdy success!

Southern - because of Hollywood, Disneyland, Sea World, Clean Sandy Beaches and Girls in Bikinis. But not necessarily in that order.

It depends on what you like. I am a native SoCal girl and my hubby is a native NorCal dude. Obviously he moved to SoCal or I would have never met him. It's too cold in NorCal for us, but his family in NorCal think SoCal is too hot for them. NorCal is prettier and there are more ballrooms to dance at, but our beaches are warmer and better.
