I have to get braces in 4 weeks. My orthodontist said that soon after I have to wear headgear at night. Does it hurt. And is it uncomfortable. Basiclly, what is it like. Please only answer if you had to wear headgear or if someone you know did.

DO IT! When I was young I was given the choice if I wanted to get braces and would then have to wear headgear. I was just thinking about my decision last night! See I was picking up your vibes! Do It! Its only for a little while and will take care of the overbite/underbit you have. Because I didn't do it anytime I have a photo taken I look like I have a turkey neck. Because of my overbit my chin rests pretty much on my neck. I don't have a chin "Chin" and am very embarrasded when I have a photo taken, I've even been told to jut my chin out and aline my teeth in my mouth when photographers take my picture, This is sooooo embarrassing! Do It! I can't say it enough. And no it doesn't hurt! Like I said I was wishing I had had it done because when I was in a wedding party for a friend and the photos came back, Eeeeeeek!! I looked so FAT! But I'm not. I was on the television news stations here in the SDeattle area last year and was shocked when my story was run oin TV that night, I looked like I didn't have a jaw at all and it did, it made me look sooo fat. So do it! I came across the Video copy I made of my TV interview last night and I think that is why I couldn't sleep because I kept thinking about how I looked. So do it! I can't say it enough. You are going to look and feel like a million bucks once it is over. I would have had to wear the headgear for a year, and 40 years ago you had to wear the headgear all the time, EVEN TO SCHOOL! Like I said, EEEEEEEK! So I told my dad "no". So stupid I was. I would be a much happier 50 year old (look like 40) today if I had had it done. The human population is kiving to be at least 100 years old now, and boy, looking at that I will have to live with my vain decision for another 40 years or so. So do it ok? Its only for a little while, the head gear realigns your jaw line, I wish I was rich $$ because I'd like to have it done today, so sorry I didnt do it. So worry not ok? It doesn't hurt, its worth every minute of "weirdness", and be glad you have the ability to have it done with little or no cost to YOU! Ok? So tell em I'll do it!

I had to wear a headgear when I was 10 yrs old. I hate to have to tell you this, but it hurt........ Maybe they have made them more comfortable as this was about 15 yrs ago. But when u sleep you have to sleep on your back or the pieces pop out of the braces. However, if I were u I'd do my best to keep it on b/c it is worth it in the end!!

Your teeth get a little sore when your braces are tightened. This lasts about a day. You're lucky you only have to wear it at night. I had to wear it always. And I was in high school, so it was very awkward socially. The good news is at the end of it you have straight teeth. Once you get used to it, it's not uncomfortable.

well its been awhile but I do know I could not sleep on my stomach because the heargear sticks out a bit so very uncomfortable..no their not attractive looking but then as I said it has been a few years now maybe they have changed them to wear for more comfort... it is a bit uncomfortable at first but you wil get use to it...also it does help move the teeth faster than if you don;t wear one....

Braces in general are uncomfortable, as is head gear. It will bug you at first but once you get used to it you will be ok. Hopefully you won't have them long.

i wore one and i hated it. i am sorry to say that i had trouble with it BUT other people i know didn't have one iota of trouble. it really speeds up your treatment if you do what your orthodontists wants you to do
