Well no ones knows for sure some think it was symbolic number and it may be 616 instead of 666 depending who interpreted it, but the most likely reasons I've heard is either that it is Nero, coincidence that his name is 666? or that it may have just been picked at random kinda because of how they displayed numbers using their Greek alphabet with each letter having a corresponding number. I think Nero is most probable, revelation IMO is clearly speaking of the times and since they couldn't say Nero they could use code which they believed Nero to be an evil dictator et would likely talk about him indirectly. I think if you research it you'll find all of revelation was speaking of the times then, not anything 2000 yrs from then happening right now. anyway as for 666 or 616 it's just a number like any other unless your a credulous fundy that gives in to superstition and actually takes the bible literally(rolls eyes).

Revelation Chapter 13:11-18 about the Antichrist in the last days during the Tribulation.
Then I saw another beast coming up out of the earth, and he had two horns like a lamb and spoke like a dragon. And he exercises all the authority of the first beast in his presence, and causes the earth and those who dwell in it to worship the first beast, whose deadly wound was healed. He performs great signs, so that he even makes fire come down from heaven on the earth in the sight of men. And he deceives those[e] who dwell on the earth by those signs which he was granted to do in the sight of the beast, telling those who dwell on the earth to make an image to the beast who was wounded by the sword and lived. He was granted power to give breath to the image of the beast, that the image of the beast should both speak and cause as many as would not worship the image of the beast to be killed. He causes all, both small and great, rich and poor, free and slave, to receive a mark on their right hand or on their foreheads, and that no one may buy or sell except one who has the mark or[f] the name of the beast, or the number of his name.
Here is wisdom. Let him who has understanding calculate the number of the beast, for it is the number of a man: His number is 666.

John uses the word "antichrists" plural. Anyone who is against the truth is anti-Christ or what is the same anti-truth.
666 represents the marriage of evil and falseness, as it can also represent the opposite of that marriage, or the marriage of good and truth. It just so happens that in this place in the Bible 666 is used in the "negative" sense of the symbol. 666 comes from 2x3 or good and truth - or its opposite - evil and falsity. The digit is tripled because 3 also means a number of completion. So that 666 is like a person who has confirmed themselves in both evil and falseness.

"Here is wisdom. Let him that hath understanding count the number of the beast: for it is the number of a man; and his number is Six hundred threescore and six." Revelation 13:18
This is where we get that affiliation. Each letter in ancient Hebrew and Greek had a numerical value. So we are told that is "the number of a man." The number of man is 6, since Adam was created on the sixth day. We do not know WHO the beast or the antichirst is. But you can be sure, God does. And Jesus is coming soon. So, be ready to meet Him. Repent, that is be sorry and change your mind, about your sins, those things in your life that do not please a holy and righteous God. Accept His plan of saving you, the exchange of LIFE, Jesus for you. He died so that you might live. Accept that He rose again to JUSTIFY you, make you right with God. And renounce your former way of life and CONFESS Jesus as Lord and Savior of your life. That is, pray and ask Him to come in to your heart and cleanse you and forgive you. Then make a public declaration of that decision. Hoping to see you at the marriage feast of the Lamb.

My husband has done a lot of reading about world religions recently. In one book he read that the Roman emporer Nero was considered a big enemy of early Christians and the number of his street address was 666. This book said that he was the devil refered to in that passage of revelations. I don't know if this is true or not, but if it is I think it's pretty funny that people are all freaked out about some dead guys address.

Revelations 13:18
"Here is wisdom. He that hath understanding, let him count the number of the beast. For it is the number of a man: and the number of him is six hundred sixty-six."
The interesting thing is, some translations make the number 616 instead of 666.

Rev 13:18 has been quoted by someone already. In the Bible, the number 6 represents God's enemies in various settings. The number 7 represents completeness from God's standpoint. 6 falls short of the completeness of perfection according to God's standards. so, 6 to the third degree (3 times for emphasis) represents gross imperfection. And in the Bible beasts often refer to human governments. So, this wild beast is given this "name" of being grossly imperfect (human governments are responsible for much of the suffering in the world). The beast represents the world's entire complex political system, which is kept functioning by big politics, big religion and big business. And those who do not receive it's "mark" by doing all that it orders, are persecuted.
