Who are "they"? If the police gave it to him he has some connection with those officers. Is his name on the title as a lien holder. If so, he reposessed the car. Did you buy it from him? Anything in writing? If you are making payments to him are you current. If you are straight call the police again. If no results call a lawyer.

you you have registration and title in your possession and in your name it is yours you have be be the one to press charges for theft and all he needs to say you gave him permission especially if he had the keys that is not proof of theft. however if you need to go get a duplicate title that will over weigh him trying to change anything on this matter and keep it out of his possession. if you live together how ever some police consider this community property.
