How much should I charge to baby-sit? My Cousin called asking me to take care of her 8 year old child for 2 weeks(from 7am to 6pm). The child is very well mannered, but also high maintenance. I'm haveing trouble figureing out how much to charge, becase 1) It's family 2) I know she doesnt have very much extra cash. Please help. Thanks!

Wow, so far there have been great suggestiong. I would just like to add that I will be baby-sitting at the child's house (which is like next door to me), so all the food and recreation will be paid for.
I did ask if she would want me to do it as a favor, and she said she didnt feel right not paying me something. Also, she wants me to give her a price. She won't give me anyclue as to how much. Thanks everyone!

This is a tough question, because as you pointed out she is family. However, you are talking about taking care of a high maintenance child for *11 hours a day*!
That's 154 hours (including weekends) or 110 hours (w/o weekends). And the *minimum* total for those hours would be $1054 or $1100.
I would recommend three things:
1) look at the minimum wage rates for your state (which you can google) and you could adjust your own price from there.
2) You could charge her $5/hr (this is a sort of default price)
OR 3) You could charge $20 a day (this is one of the nicest numbers..it works out to be the cheapest on her...and though it isn't huge amount to earn, I think for family, it's fine. Plus it is a nice even number. =) And personally I also use this rate with family)

i understand that she is family but that's alot of responsibility and time. I would say that the average babysitter would charge about $75 a week for that age. So since you are family i would charge half of that. Since the child is 8 years old have things for the child to do that is inexpensive. Check out the Internet etc. for some ideas. remember that while you may feel bad about charging your family you have to supply food, entertainment etc. which for a few days is not expensive but 2 weeks can be. Good Luck *if she next door than still half of what i said would be appropriate

For a proper facility to do this she would be looking at paying over £150 a week.
You have to take into account the food you will have to provide as 3 meals a day can get very expensive then theres transport, entertainment etc
You could ask your cousin the sort of things her child likes to eat & then ask her how much she's thinking of paying you, you can negotiate from there.
I recommend getting some money upfront so you can make sure you have the food she likes (it also means that if she decides after the 2 weeks thats she isn't gonna pay you (it does happen) you will at least have been paid for some of it)

Don't feel guilty about charging her. She wouldn't be able to ask you for such a massive favour for nothing.
IMPORTANT FACT: She needs a babysitter for two weeks and you are available. END OF.
Tell her that you are not sure what the going rate is and ask her what she is thinking of. Nail her down before you start the babysitting or it could end up with a massive family fall out at the end.
If she is really offering stupid money then think very carefully if you want to do it. It is long hours and it will be hard work.
Hope you get it sorted. If you just cant sort it between you then ask another relative (preferably older) to talk to her and get a figure out of her.

You shouldn't charge anything you said it yourself thats family unless you are in a professional classed child care orginization it would be fair to charge like 5-9$ a day but if not just do it because she is famliy.

the point of charging her is correct, even though she is family because your time is worth something and sounds like alot of it will be spent with the kiddo, so id say ok..12 hours a day basically, 20-25 bucks would be a fair price for a day of your time dont you think?

That's long hours and you are giving a service so don't under-sell yourself.
Ask other family members such as your parents what they think is reasonable and then discuss it with your cousin to come to an agreement.

nusery nurse (trained) between £8 and £10 Per hour
babysitter around £5
though seeing as it;s family you need to reach a compromise. you may have to settle for less but you will really be doing her a favour. x
