Elmer's is a pain, i suggest finding Knox gelatin at the market, and mix it according to the package... it's not flavoured, but it does contain some sugar. Mix it thoroughly -- veeeeery thoroughly.
Work section by section, making each spike. comb the gel-mix through your spike, shape it and blow-dry, preferably lying down on your side to blow dry. Finish it with hairspray, and blowdry that. Do the next section. It helps to have someone working it with you.
It will shampoo out -- and be sure to use conditioner as a follow-up once it's out -- it does some damage to your hair.

Beyond the Zone hair cement called SPIKE IT it really feels like glue when you put it on but it washes out fairly easily!!!

You can try that, but I know that Elmer's glue is used often. It's a pain to wash out, but I know it makes them stand.

rock hard gele'. towel dry and apply. you can also use your hair dryer.
