I served in the Air Force for four years. So the answer is yes.
However, 1962-66 was a different time and a different military. One thing is that the military in the early 1960's tired to take care of the troops, the lower ranking members. Now, the troops are abused in the worst way. The troops not only get to die but they get to go to prison for mistakes of their leadership.
I must say also, I was not a Vietnam Vet who were asked to make the alltiment sacrifice, and there leadership did not seem to care much about the troops.
I care about the troops and we should not have started either the Vietnam or Iraq Wars. We did not know anything before the war about these people, and if we did know about them we would not have fought these war, and lost some many young people, not mention the million plus Vietnamese and Iraqi who we have killed for mistakes in judgement.

I would only die for things I believe in and people I love so it would depend if they are members of the elite.

I think of that question every time I hear that about 1400 people die a year trying to cross our borders from mexico since they print and distribute manuals on how to illegally get here and stay here. The rest of the 4 million make it though.

When these jerks decide that it is time for me to die, I'll die. The trick is to stay below their radar; which I find very hard to do. The last time I looked, none of the children of anyone in either house of congress or the president's family or cabinet were fighting in Iraq or Afganistan.
