There are two (or three) problems. 30+ years is a a bit too old for Champagne. Almost everything depends on how it was stored - and what come back the purchaser has if it is no longer drinkable. Thus you need provenance, i.e a history of how and here ithas been kept. If the purchaser has no comeback, I personally think the wine will not raise very much. Old Champagne is a minority interest; many people do not like the taste.

And there are a number of forged famous name old wines on the market - so again provenance is essential.

How much would I pay? I love Champagne and drink it at least once a week. And I like old Champagne -- but this is a little too old to be sure it is drinkable. Tricky. I'd gamble no more than $50 if there was no money back guarantee. If there was no money back guarantee and no provenenance I wouldn't bother.

Remember - it is worth only what someone is prepared to pay for it.

You've gotten a great answer from a real expert here. I have a 1980 bottle that I intend to drink as soon as I can drum up an excuse. Anyone care to comment on the likelihood that I will enjoy the 1980 vintage?

Well, an 84 vintage is going on ebay for $63... I'd guess it's not worth what you paid for it.
