You didn't mention a budget which is a big factor in the realm of cameras.
Generaly the best digital cameras are still made by the traditional camera makers. Digital zoom doesn't matter so ignore that feature, Optical zoom is what you want to compare.
Remember crossing over movies and stills don't expect the best results, the two devices are unique so don't expect a video camera's still grabs to equal a digital cameras pictures nor should you expect a digital still cameras movies to be close to the quality of a video cameras. In the case of still cameras videos eat up a lot of card space and the cameras usually limit you in video recording time.
Don't worry about filling up the camera, just buy extra memory cards that your camera will use. There are also standalone devices that function as a travel harddrive you can plug your memory card into and offload pictures onto for storage but they are expensive.
check out www.dpreview.com (also listed in the sources), they excellent camera comparisons and helpful forums for your specific questions.
ABOVE ALL if you buy online research research research the people you buy from. There are a lot of scam businesses in the photography world doing things like selling a camera way under what anyone else is charging then calling you after you order to sell you an expensive option package that includes such things as the battery and charging cable they removed from your package, manuals, bait and switch on lenses, etc. So when shopping around, google that site and check out the reviews people have left. I just had a friend that is a professional photographer making his first online camera purchase get ripped off of about 1500 dollars by not researching.

you left out the most important item...how much money do you have to spend? you might want to check out dpreview.com - & keep in mind, no camera does everything perfectly, but you can come close if you are willing to spend over $2,500 for a pro model. As far as worrying about filling up the card - buy something that uses a dual format - both an sd/xd & Compact Flash card - CF cards are really cheap now so you can pick up a number of them, or just buy a 1 gig card. If you take a look at some of the reviews - a lot of manufacturers are producing long zoom cameras, but most of them are not so good at night (Panasonic is a good example) - you tend to trade one thing for another. If you really are not limited by $$ get a digital SLR & a couple of different lenses - for ex. the Nikon D-50 is nice...just pricey (especially after you add the lenses) - I have an Olympus C-8080 - takes great pics - even in low light (fantastic lens) - but the zoom is only 3x - so I traded zoom for pic quality. Good luck & have fun this summer ;)

The best way to make sure you have unlimited space to record photos, is get high capacity memory media ( smart media, compact flash cards, etc.) Depending on the camera, there are now high capacity memory cards that can record 100's of pictures on a single card. Depending on how many pictures you plan on taking, a couple of cards would be a good idea. In regard to the type of camera you should buy. My advice is to buy something simplet to use, but with features that you will use. Simplicity means low price. Dont overspend on features you will not use in everyday photo shooting. Leave that to the pro's.

The Canon PoweShot A610 is a great camera for a very reasonable price. I bought one last year, and I haven't had any problems with it. It also has all of the features you mentioned. You will need an extra memory card though. circuitcity.com has a SanDisk 1GB memory card for 30.00 right now. It holds about 550 pictures for this camera. Good luck!
