It is said that English is the hardest language to learn, but Chinese is also ranked up there with English. It is a personal thing because either a person will catch on fast or it will take them some time. English is said to be the hardest because you have words spelled the same with different meaning. Read vs Read. Also you have words that sound the same, but spelled different. To, too, and two. These are just a few of the reasons English is consider to be the hardest language to learn

chinese. Under the Kanxi dictionary, it is said to have over 46,000 unique characters. It has two versions of traditional chinese characters and simplified chinese character which may be a problem if you learn one and not the other, china (simplified) taiwan/hongkong (traditional). Learning what it means is quite a challenge other than learning how to say and use it. Another challenge is learning the idioms of 4 character can take time. But, eventually, it will pay off when you use 4 characters to tell a whole story. Forget about the poems, only the masters will get there. Just remember with over 4,000 years of culture, we have a lot to catch up to the complexity of the grammars and usage of it. Thinking further, this language can be spoken in a variety of dialects like mandarin, cantonese, and etc....

Assuming you are referring to an adult, who is not a native speaker.

* To learn to read:
Chinese: This language has at least 10 000 glyphs in "common" usage.
There are an additional 50 000 - 1000 000 glyphs that are used, in addition to rare glyphs, and those of Ancient Chinese.

Japanese: This language uses three different writing systems.
[Hirgana, Katakana, Kanji. The Latin writing system is also used. A fifth writing system is also used in some segments of Japanese society.]

*To learn to speak:
!Kung: The click sounds are very difficult to pronounce. [Even native speakers don't always pronounce them correctly. Other click languages have fewer clicks. Nelson Mandala, for example, could not correctly pronounce the clicks in his first language --- Xhosa.]

*To learn to write:
Chinese: Words can be any part of speech.

English: Grammar rules have numerous exceptions.

If dead/undeciphered languages are included, then rongo-rongo has to rate as one of the most awkward to read. this is a boustrophedon writing system, with alternate lines upside down to each other.

English is the hardest from any other language because of our stupid "exceptions" to grammatical rules. But Chinese is probably the hardest going the other way.

It would be Arabic. Its because Arabic is written from right to left against Roman letters used in European languages worldwide. Its also difficutl to read and speak in the language because Arabic requires so many different expressions of pronunciation. Addtionally, just like English and Spanish, Arabic is also spoken in different accents in different countries in the Middle East.

I used to think that chinese was the hardest, but there is actually no difficult language to learn if you put your effort to it.

If you are asians, the languages will be closer to their own. Let's say Chinese can learn Japanese easier than American.

Same as American can learn Spanish easier than Japanese. It all depends
