Is there a governing body that allows alterations to the coran?, because it seems that every where in the world the muslim priest that is in charge of a mosque has a lot of freedom in the way in which he chooses to interprete the coran.

There is only one Quran, andnot multiple altered copies or something. Originally in ARABIC, every word is the same. Ofcourse when you're translating you'll use different words to correctly get the message across. But most of the words are actually just interpretations. So.

Quran is only one there are no versions no alterations and no errors what so ever in it but the thing is the arabic used in Quran is ancient and quiet difficult to understand even for new world's arabs, u will only find little difference in translations just becoz its hard to understand but the arabic text in Quran all over the world is same u wont even find a single difference of a dot. Most Islamic countries have government approved translations of Quran which are translated by scholars and people who understand Quranic arabic and they get checked again and again. And the priests ur talking about they dont exaclty translate the quran they explain verses in their own words its not an alteration in Quran but their way to simplify the verse to the people who dont understand it.

no one has the right to change any letter in the Quran. it's a great sin for doing this.

in Islam. there is no such a thing called the Pop. the job of the priest is to remind people of God and give advices. but he is no better than everyone. he is a human being who think he has knowledge.

about the interpret of the Quran. there are verses in the Quran that are clear and understood. but there are verses in the Quran are still undiscover until a period of time passed by.
for example, the verse that indicate that the earth is round. the followers explained it in a different way because they don't know that the earth is round yet. but today we understand what this verse mean because we knew that the earth is round.

so some verses are clear to the mind of the reader. and other verses need study and deep though. but no one person is responsible of explaining the whole Quran on his own. there are more than one person who has different point of view. but mostly all the explanation are little bit similar. but never 100% accurate.

Quran is never altered and the words will be save till the end of world, every one will wonder how? As this is the only Scripture which has many believers who remember every word of it, so they can write the whole Quran, they can find any mistake in printing or editing.
While translating Quran, as this is the translation from one language to other so it can never match exactly.
