The poem is structured like a song, but the "love" part is ironic. The poem was originally called, "Prufrock Among the Women." Throughout the poem Prufrock talks about his inadequacies and how women judge him, compare him to perfect images like Michelangelo's David. He also questions whether the quest of love is worth the chance of rejection.... and if love can sufficiently fill the void created by modern life.

It's not to be taken literally, it's a metaphor.
