Possibly because if the plane has an issue before they can use it for a suicide dive, they can ditch and float down safely and live to die another day.

Not necessarily that they must die.If they ar successful on that particular mission, I'm sure they hav 2go back . If they fail at a mission, they rather die than 2return.
